Speaking of coyotes, I probably got Diesel almost killed the other night. I took him to this hydro field about 5 mins from where I live and as I was driving there, something crossed the road and I saw this scrawny looking sad dog. I thought it was a lost dog and didn't think nothing of it. As I made it to parking lot, I decided to put my high beams on and see if it was still out there since I know Diesel would most likely go and say hi. I was not only greeted by 1 but by 2 sets of glowing eyes. I then realized that what I saw crossing the road was not a dog but a coyote. Diesel was barking inside the car but I knew better so I left and drove back home. I never realized how scary that moment was till after the fact. I've been taking Diesel there almost every week....morning and night and I've never had to scout the place since I never saw anything there aside from ground hogs. It's also between 2 major roads so cars pass by so it's not completely isolated. I usually just open the door and let Diesel out. Had I not taken my time that night to take him out I would've probably lost him. My area is surrounded by tons of parks and soccer fields so I usually let him off leash at night especially in the winter since no one is ever around. I dont know where they came from but they certainly caught me off guard. They are indeed getting too close for comfort. Needless to say I'm never bringing him back there or let him loose at night around my area ever again. He might've walked away injured from fighting one and that's if he's lucky but there surely would have been a tremendous loss on my part if he had to fight 2 coyotes.

You would not lost him... Asha was chasing 3 coyotes and she is still alive.
As usual coyotes don't attack large dogs. They lure dogs in the forest and tire them out playing chasing games and then... they may attack but not always. I know a dog who became too friendly with coyotes. Another one was chasing them multiply times making his owner very upset... the dog has never been hurt by coyotes.
Wolves may kill any dog.

Thanks for that Lisa but then again to be on the safe side I'd rather not let him get near one just in case he decides to run after one. I just don't like him running to places whe I can't see him. I know for a fact there was two then again who knows if there was another one along with them. I was just concerned since I've never come across one and didn't know how Diesel or the coyotes would react to one another. There's so many sightings of them now and attacks within my area but I've only heard attacks on smaller dogs though.
Wolves though are a different story. They are much more aggressive. I know you take Asha and Gino in the mountains...do you worry about them showing up or are they're territories far out from where you take your babies?

Yes it's better to be on the safe side for sure I don't let Asha off-leash in the dog park anymore. She is still a crazy teenager. Gino would never run after coyotes. He is not a chaser. My dogs are always on the leash in the mountains. Unless it's very open area like alpine meadows, lakes, etc. When we meet a bear we move slowly away. Only bears with abnormal behaviour attack and it's rear. We met bears 3 times already includ bear mom and cubs. Wolves are not common here and they don't approach people. My dogs don't run free in the forest to attract them. So far so good

Kazi can't believe that her sister chases coyotes still.....she is a cra--zz-zzz--yyyy girl!!! We have a saying here....an hour before dusk, and an hour after sunrise....that's the time that the coyotes come out....that being said, it reminds me of the time that Kerrie came across 3 coyotes mid-day in the fields last year. That was when Kazi was a little ( ) puppy still, and she had to carry her while holding Dante's leash hoping that the coyotes who were starting to circle her weren't going to attack them all. Remember to carry pepper spray with you ..... just in case.....

Thanks..uhhh Kerrie or Barb? LOL can't remember who usually posts between the two of you.
Diesel is a chaser so he'll definitely go say hi to anything that moves...even a car so I can never be too careful.

Well Kazi would chase anything that moves too, especially if the dog has either 1) a ball in its mouth 2) food in its mouth 3) or just another dog....lol...we were laughing at this yesterday before/after our obedience class at Monica's.....but she is such a sweet dog...and very fun-loving and social...and she has the darkest chocolate brown eyes that make her so adorable.
Lana, it's Barbara.....when Kerrie posts, she usually signs her initial at the bottom of the post.
