We were talking to Monica tonight, and she told us that Kava is looking like a little Kazi Jr. more and more with each passing day.....LOL....hanging from broom handles or pant legs, loves tugs and doesn't give them up without a fight.....LOL. We are nicknaming her Kava-Kazi.......you go girl! 2 years later, our Kazi is still a firecracker. Full of passion, unfortunately now we can't hold onto the broom handle anymore...she's too heavy!

But why are people posting on facebook? It is a small closed group, post your puppy pics and stories on this forum... for everyone to see!

I'm one of those old curmudgeons who refuses to "do" Facebook. Meh! LOL. I know, I just went over there and told those guys that things are getting a little light with puppy photos and such these days. Everyone is posting like mad on the Dobereich facebook, which is nice. but they are forgetting all those people who aren't on facebook. Geesh, to post twice isn't so bad. Its not like we have to go get film developed at Blacks, get copies to mail via snail mail to all our friends.

Hi all
I would have posted earlier but have been living the life of a "new mom" since Friday night! lol
Here's an update/report on my girl Kava (means "coffee" in Croatian) - Dobereich's Ultra Caffeinated. By the way, no pics here yet - need to figure out how to do it and will hopefully post many very very soon (this weekend for sure).
Personality/Play I am a spirited, rambunctious and very spunky little girl. I just love to play! I can amuse myself with my toys or exploring the backyard. I also love to play with others. My brother Indi came to visit one day and even though he was a little overwhelmed by me at first, he eventually got into the swing of things and we had so much fun running around together. I play with my mom too - we play tag and although I usually chase her, I'm learning to also be chased. The neighbour's two young boys (age 2 and 4) have come over to visit too and we also played tag. Sometimes they stop moving and I have to encourage them to keep playing by bowing and play barking at them. Mom told them that its a friendly playful bark and not to be afraid. The boys have 2 chichuahuas at home so they're not afraid of dogs. When I run after them, I'm very good - I just chase them but don't jump up on them. I'm still learning though not to jump on them (and everyone else) when I first see them and when I'm excited. I also would love to play with my sister Buffy (she's a cat) but she doesn't get it. She just hisses, growls and run away! Of course mom plays with me too - we play a version of tag/hide & seek - she tries to hide behind the car but I always find her! So much fun though when she playfully says "I'm going to get you" and then she chases after me! Sometimes mom goes from side to side (like a basketball player) and I follow her every move. That's fun too.
I have a whole array of great toys but my favourites are my rope for chewing on and the stuffed purple dinosaur that mom brought to Monica's the day she picked me. I like to shake it and chew on it and the squeaky noise it makes is awesome! I would love to play with shoes but mom won't let me and she keeps them out of reach most of the time. Laces are fun too - too bad I'm not allowed to play with them either.
I have a real lockjaw grip - that's how I got mom to notice me when she came to visit for the first time. People say that I would be great at Schutzhund because of the grip. We'll see. I don't think mom has time for that so we'll have to figure out other games to keep me occupied. One of the first phrases I learned and am still learning is "no bite". Darn. And my favourite thing is grabbing onto my blanket and I wish she would just play tug of war with me!
Eating I'm not really food-driven. I eat my meals (or most of them) but I'm not so so interested. Over the course of 30-45min, I will eat a little, then get distracted, then go back for another nibble. I end up eating 3/4 to all of my meal depending on how hungry I am, time of day, who knows what! I'm eating the kibble that Monica provided combined with a stew (recipe provided by Monica) of ground beef, rice, potato, sweet potato, carrots, cottage cheese, fish, oil, supplements. I like the stew the best. Mom moistens the kibble a bit but I still like the stew better.
House training I know that pooping is for outside only, and I know that peeing is also for outside but I sometimes get excited and I just have to pee from excitement. Poor mom has to clean up after me. I am pretty good though. Not too many pee accidents. If mom hasn't already taken me out for a poop (she seems to know before I do that I need to go), I will definitely let her know. Sometimes her back is turned while she is washing dishes but I let her know by jumping up on her and being a real nuisance.
Nighttime My first night home with mom I spent on the bed. Mom took me out almost every hour to see if I had to pee. I probably peed 4 times out of the 6 we went out. She carried me directly out to the backyard. Then on the 2nd night, mom brought the smaller crate into the bedroom and put it right by her bed. I cried and whined and barked but she shushed me, then spoke in soothing tones, then she just ignored me! I settled. That night we went out for potty about 4-5 times. At least once was a false alarm. The last time out was about 6am for a poop. Mom decided to bring me onto the bed for a cuddle. I was pretty excited but then settled and we slept in until 8am! The third night was about the same as the night before but after the 5:30am outing outside, I was wide awake and wouldn't settle in the crate. Mom gave in and brought me on the bed. She knew it was a mistake. On night #4, I went into the larger crate that will stay in the bedroom. There is a great comfy duvet on the floor, three sides are enclosed by walls or wardrobe and there is a quilt on top. Like a real den! The one side that is visible faces the bed so I can see her just fine. I was able to settle pretty quickly that night and then in the early morning when I wanted to play with mom or come onto the bed, she didn't let me and I ended up settling after a good 5-10 of crying, barking and whining. Poor neighbours! But mom just ignored me and I had no choice but to relax. I wasn't happy though and made sure she knew by making little noises. Finally - night #5 - I settled without any complaints, and only got up once at 1:30 for a pee. After that we both slept until about 6am. We go to bed pretty early (10pm) so we got about 8 hours of sleep!! Mom really appreciated it.
The Other Crate Other than the big crate that stays in the bedroom (where I only go at bedtime), I have a slightly smaller crate (with part of it blocked off) that is in the big kitchen. It is in a corner and the ceiling is covered with a big dog bed that my sister Buffy (the cat) sleeps on. There is no other comfortable place in the kitchen so I really love it - I have my blanket and toys. I have a full view of the kitchen and even to the living room so I know what's going on and where mom is when she leaves. I go in there all by myself. When mom is around, she spends all her time in the kitchen - cooking, washing dishes, on the laptop, doing paperwork at the counter or the table. The radio (CBC radio one - lots of people talking) is on almost all the time so I'm never really lonely. When mom has to leave to work (in another part of the house) or leave the house, she closes the door. I am getting used to being alone and am crying/whining/barking much less than at first. Yesterday, mom went out for about 90min and I was ok, then she had four 1-hr appointments and I was quiet for all of them. I do whine though when she comes back to wash her hands then leaves quickly without even saying hello to me! But she does always come back and I go out to pee, get some water and sometimes we have a little time to spend together again before she goes back to work.
How i spend my days I spend most of my time in the kitchen (blocked off from the living room with a baby gate) where I play with my toys or with mom, or a lot of time I nap or just relax in my crate. I also spend a lot of time in the backyard (just outside the kitchen) where there is a little patch of grass, flower beds, a vegetable garden and a carport. Just enough space for a little puppy until I am fully vaccinated and can go to the park. I love standing at the open doorway and observing the backyard area and beyond - I sniff, I listen, I look around. Mom thinks I'm developing my protection instinct - keeping a very watchful eye, ear & nose on my surroundings. Mom is really loud with the pots and pans so I am used to her noisy clanging around.
Mom and I spend time running around in the yard and she even has started taking me on little walks in the neighbourhood. I walk on the leash like a pro. I stay right at mom's side (sometimes the left, sometimes the right - lol) but occasionally stop in my tracks because I see, smell or hear something that either startles me or makes me want to pay attention. Mom just keeps encouraging me and I run to catch up to her. When we turn around and head back for home, I know immediately that we're going home and I tend to pull a little. Mom stops me though and doesn't let me get away with it. I have walked on the sidewalk with fast cars going by and a streetcar so am quickly becoming accustomed to big loud noises. Mom doesn't push me though - she lets me go at my own pace and just encouraging me all the time. If we need to cross a busy road, mom picks me up and carries me.
Another new experience is riding in the bike trailer. On the first full day home, mom just pushed the bike with me riding in the bike trailer. A little scary but I'll get used to it. Mom doesn't drive very much so we haven't been back in the car since we came home.

Hi Korina,
Thank you for sharing your pictures of little Kava. What a sweetie pie. Sounds like she is quite the little character. Is she your first Dobe?
Oh no . .I have to get a grip here. . .reading the description of your first days with her is tempting me to get a little buddy for Quin. LOL.

Onyx (black & white collar) leaves for her new home tomorrow. I am trying on the name "Jade" for my puppy (stripe collar). But by this time tomorrow I too will be hearing the howling and carrying on in the crate that everyone else gets to deal with in the first few days. Here's some pics of momma Cajun with Onyx and Jade. Jade out front, Onyx making a funny face. Jade with her momma Jade Onyx
