I was asking about the Immune system boost methods specifically related to Zeus. When he was boarded at Monica's he beat up his the top of his muzzle behind his nose from rubbing on the crate door. It has turned into a localized staph infection. I was expelling it and peroxide spray but it wasn't really getting better. This week I started using Hibitane after a good expel and peroxide wipe and it's about 3 days of hibitane on the spot about 4 times a day and I can see progress. Zeus isn't on any specific things to boost his immune at this point and hasn't been since spring. He's had probably 3-4 bouts of staph since a puppy and was on meds to clear up the 1st 3, that got pretty involved. The last one was last year fall going on 2 years old. It was on his neck and I'm sure it was somewhat of a reaction to brass buckle fastners on his collar. I cleared that one up with expelling and peroxide and no more brass collar hardware. I don't want him on meds ( think it was Celephexin the last times) if i can avoid it as he's 3 years old now and I think with some immune boosting vitamins / holistic things as opposed to formal meds from the vet and continuing the hibitane cream things will clear up. That's why I was aksing what you are using to for Immune system boost Lana. Zeus gets flaxseed oil and garlic outside his kibble and stew but at this point that's his only extras. He's on Acana Grasslands for quite a while now. Fill me in on where you are getting the Ester C and Echnicia the brands and the doseage you are using and frequency. I would like to get Zeus on that for a while. Staph is just one of the more common bacterias, but there are many bacteria and an infection doesn`t necessarily indicate a weak immune system. Chronic generalized staph infections would definitely be cause to look at boosting the immune system. But treating an infected area where an injury is involved isn`t the same thing. Zeus rubbed his nose raw during the first night of his stay after he had a little accident. He either rubbed his nose while burying his blanket, or on the door of the crate. Whichever, its fair to say that he pushed some of that feces under the broken skin. although I cleaned it, I may not have gotten all of it. Without further cleansing, bacteria started to grow. I know you say that you know the smell, but your smelling the puss and blood smell, not staph in particularly. Unless you grow that culture you cannot say for sure that its a staph infection as per say. Or at least not to lump it into the same category as a localized or generalized staph from weaken immunity. I`m just mentioning this because we shouldhn`t lump these things under the same umbrella, and forums can cause people to mis-treat one issue because its confused with another. Its a common thing to get an infection in a wound around the face due to the constant contact with bacterias. But because we know that feces was involved with Zeus, look up the more common bacterias associated with feces and then see which topical cleanser will work best to kill that particular bacteria. Do not clean the area with hydrogen peroxide more then once. its breaks down healthy skin tissue along with the bad. Use one of the cleansers that Lisa has mentioned. Pyoben is good, and there`s another you can buy over the counter at most vets called `Canadian medicated shampoo`. Our black pug got a nasty infection from Angel`s pups biting her neck. They broke down the skin and it was literally mummifying and sloughing off. I used the hibitane first, but when i moved to this shampoo it seemed to dry things up faster, so was for that particular situation the better product to use. Its a 2 % sulfur + 2% salicylic based antibacterial and anti-fungal, good for getting to wounds after crusts have appeared.

Thanks Monica. It's tough spot as you know right on the top of his muzzle behind his nose. Since I started the hibitane cream 3-4 times a day and it's helped it for sure as I can see today for sure improvement. Vet is closed till next week but I could try the pharmacy for the 5% Benzoil Peroxide cream mentioned in Lisa's thread. You think that's worth a shot?
I can try the vert on Monday for the wash stuff you mentioned.

I applied 5% benzoyl peroxide cream on Asha's staph. It dried it out and helped to keep it under cotrol... but we had to use antibiotics to completely get rid of it.
Is it an open wound Gary? If it is I would use silver liquid or silver gel to fight any infection first... that's my way to treat it.

No not really open Lisa. If I squeeze it like popping ingrown hairs it will expel some puss or blood and it has that staph smell to it.
He usually goes the other way if he thinks that's the plan for me to pop his spots, but if I go outside and play fetch with a ball I can get at it for a good look. He will hold the ball in his mouth and I can get at it for some squeezing and good look over or wiping. I did it a few days back and tonight I did it again. It's getting reduced in size and less stuff coming out. I got some of the hairs pushed out tonight too. He was really letting me go over it good tonight. It's improving but still there.

Maybe you should continue what you are doing if it helps. You may try benzoyl peroxide. It won't hurt him and may dried it out.

Zeus gets a stew each day similar to Scarlet based off lean/ medium ground beef ( depending which is on sale), with chicken stock and usually some rice and garlic added. As you know Andrenia, Monica was giving him and me the rasberries the last 2 training weeks, so he's on the 2nd week of a diet cutting back his amount of food.
He gets 2 meals a day. 1 1/2 cups of Acana and about 1/2 cup of stew so 2 cups of food twice a day. Total 4 cups. I never thought I would say this...... a dog that was so picky to eat anything all his life up to his neuter in Sept. is now on a reduced volume food diet!!!
Since he recovered from the neuter surgery and approching his 3rd birthday this past Nov he's got a great appetite and since going on his cut back diet for 2 weeks, his meals are gone in no time. He's never eaten his whole life pre neuter, like he has since, and espically the last 10 days on a reduced volume.
His nose is clearing up using the hibitane. I got some 5% benzol peroxide last night and put some on, but I think it must bother him as all he could do was try and find how to wipe it off. The hibitane doesn't bother him, so I think I'll continue using the hibitane and hopefully it continues to clear up his nose. It seems to be making a difference.

Aww Zeus keeps getting picked on for his spare tire!! He looked much better this Sunday on his "diet" lol. His chest just blew up in the past couple of weeks though, He is looking very mature and handsome Gary. I noticed Scarlet kept giving him the eye LOL. I don't know if this would help, but maybe switch the ground beef to turkey? Less fat, and its overall more lean of a meat. Scarlet's a piggy, she gets (2x a day) 2.25 cups of Acana, and a tablespoon or two of ground turkey (plain) lately as I haven't had time to whip up any stews. We just are in the process of switching her to Acana grasslands, so there is still a little bit of Canidae within those 2.25 cups each meal, but not a lot. She was picky before hand too, but now she can't scarf it down fast enough. I have noticed a huge difference in her coat and her stools since switching to Acana. I thought when we started switching, she wasn't taking to it, but it ended up being just the Giardia... She loves the Acana! Glad to hear Zeus is doing better. Lana how is D??

Thank you for the kind words Andrenia! Zeus has always had a pretty big chest. He had that even before he was a year old. It started to really become noticable back when he met his dad Bosley when Zeus was about 11 months old. I have some shots of them together and even though he was small his chest was very noticable even at that young age. You maybe didn't notice it before? Monica mentioned it back then and all along, but now she's fixated on his butt I'll get him back down a few pounds. It seems 75 lbs or less is his ideal weight. He was 77.4 lbs at Woofstock and right now not sure, I'll give him a couple more weeks of diet and then a weigh in to see, but I will get his weight perfect. Zeus's heart belongs to Reyna He knows Scar is D's girl and he doesn't want any trouble with D. They were really good together with Jack last Sunday out for a nice little walk in High Park together. It was strange 3 boys and no girls Ground turkey would be good but way to expensive. There aren't too many limits I have for Zeus but we will stick with the ground beef. I tried turkey in the past and he wasn't a big fan of it and it's more expensive. I think we just need a reduced quanity of food and that will drop his weight down a little. Time will tell. Food Basics we get lean ground beef in big packages and it's way cheaper than any other chain. My17 years of being a grocery manager for a major chain before my present career coming back! Knowing to find the lost leaders ;D Costco is good too. It's not always as easy to get the lean though and somethimes it ends up being medium. I'll be sure to get lean though for a while.

As for the immune boosting stuff Gary, I'll try and email you what I'm giving D as soon as I can. 4 cups I wish Diesel was eating 4 cups...this guy can eat 7...one Acana bag lasts me for about 2.5 weeks...3 weeks max if he doesn't wanna eat sometimes...I keep going back to global every other week to buy a bag...maybe I should buy 5 bags at one go to stock up lol. I'm with you on food basics Gary...I buy D's lean turkey, chicken breast and steaks there

I think we need an update on Diesel. How's he doing? And how's that slash on his nose (the one he got from running into the fence)?

Hi Dyanne, thanks for asking. Diesel is doing well. His ear pretty much healed (where he scratched it badly). He's almost done on the ivomec and he just needs to go for another scraping in a week or so. As for his nose...the hair is growing slowly. You can still see his skin tho. He's so clumsy...two days after that incident, he nicked his hind leg and took out a chunk of hair *sigh*...
