Apollo had some nasty zits coming up on his chin and while at the show this weekend we noticed the flaky bald patches on his hindquarters in the sunlight. I was freaking out a little about it and when i asked momica she didn't seem too surprised what i got out of her was "yeah, that's staph" lol. Poor guy didn't enjoy getting those zits popped and the smell is pretty bad like Gary said, its a strong irony smell. I started cleaning both areas with Pyoben, which worked well for our pug pups when they had dry skin. I'll let you know how it works for him. Also we use hibitane to wash between the wrinkles on the pugs and my boxers jowls weekly and that helps a lot with keeping away infection. It's good to use on the chin area for dobes too.

Short coated breeds have less hair covering their body. The coarser short hair allows a direct route for bacteria to travel into the follicle bed. Pyoderma is basically zits, bacterial, and if not treated the bacteria spreads over a larger area.
Reds tend to have more sensitive skin and as a result I do find a bit of a higher prevalence of staph. But chin acne is determined a lot by the length and density of the hairs on the chin, as well as the way a dog eats, and what they eat (high fats, etc).
Dober-zits are common and most vets treat with Cephalexin. The type that Scarlet has will clear nicely as well with topical cleansing. But chin acne needs a bit of intervention or else it keeps coming back, as in Gary's boy's case. You have to pop the chin acne because it is actually hair that is impacted into the shaft. So the antibiotics will kill the bacteria, but it will not dissolve the hair. Eventually the bacteria will grow again because it has a host.
So chin acne gets a good squeeze, cleaned with hibitane, or pyoben, or phenrex, etc. Clean it with a rough fabric face cloth or or fine bristle brush. Soft nail brushes from the pharmacy work well.
Gary will attest to the fact that Zeus's the chin acne subsided once he started squeezing out the impacted hairs. I remember your expression Gary when I started popping all those chin zits. LOL. If I remember right you had a couple issues with the collar, but got that figured out pretty quickly.
I think that heavier coated breeds do get pyodermas, they're just not as prevalent and/or noticeable. Softer fur, not hair, and more of it covers the body to protect the skin from direct contact. Dogs sleep on the floors, ground, and are in direct contact with dirt a lot. But hey, those long coated breeds get more hot spots and deep rooted impacted hairs, some which require surgery. So the short coated breeds are not so bad when considering. Not to mention that there is a lot less to sweep up off the floor and the Dobes just look better...lol

Yes Zeus had the chin acne bad and the lower part of his upper lips. When Monica 1st started squeezing and showing me, and the hairs were all popping out, some as long as a 1/2" I was amazed! He had like dozens and dozens of those ingrown hairs. It took a while but staying on top of it and washing his chin it's good now.
He will still get the odd one and he hates having them popped, BUT he LOVES his wubba Kong, Cuz and toss balls so what I do is when he brings one of those toys and he wants to play tug, fetch etc., I just hold the toy and go over his chin or lips doing some quick squeezes as needed. A few times a week taking a look and a washing his chin and lips after meals and he's been pretty good.
He doesn't like to put his nose or lips in the food bowl or water bowl. He actually barks for us to pile the food up more on one side of the bowl so the bottom and other side of the bowl is clear so he doesn't have to bury his nose in the food.
You think he's actually smart enough to know if he keeps his nose, lips and chin cleaner he has less chance of having the zits and less he has to endure getting them popped?
I know he likes his face clean because If we don't catch him after eating he's more than happy to trot into the family room and proceed to wipe his face up and down the carpet or the nice new fancy throw rug under our big table in our kitchen he will use as a napkin too!
I know Monica......"King Zeus".
