So I log on to Facebook tonight and someone whom I thought was a friend has as her status :People who crop their dogs ears and dock tails should be hung, Bastards." I of course responded with the usual, its done with the utmost care and only by a qualified professional. That I have never seen either of my puppies in pain because of it...and so on... What do you say to that???I was really offended because we treat our dogs like family and love them to death and to be called a bastard and told that I should be hung because of my pups appearance makes me very furious!!!!! UGHHHHHHHH

guess you know who your real friends are now and it doesn't sound like that person has a very good opinion of you, or me as I'm a cropped dobermen owner and lover of cropped ears.
Just delete them from your facebook friends and hang around here more!

That's a personal choice to crop or not. Also it depends what we used to... I always had natural Dobes and cropping is not an option for me.
Monica gives people a choice and I respect it a lot.

Many Doberman owners nowadays prefer not to have their dobes ears cropped because it's "too painful," "cruel to the animals" etc...Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion and I'm fine with cropped or natural ears but to call someone a bastard for having it done is a bit harsh. All of us who's gotten our dobes ears cropped turned out fine and in my experience, if Diesel showed any signs of discomfort I would've known and done something to alleviate the pain right away. He turned out ok and not once did he whine and cry about his ears throughout the whole taping process. I'd be offended too but then I'd try to be the mature person out of the two...just not worth my time arguing. Just yesterday, I was walking Diesel...minding our own business and as we walked past these two teenagers one of them commented and might I add in a loud way intended for me to hear about how Diesel was such an ugly dog with the pointy ears and skinny body...kinda pissed me of a bit but I let it go. Why bother saying something to ignorant people who clearly don't appreciate how wonderful the Doberman breed is.

I agree totally with everyone. I did delete her, and Im not the type of person who thinks every dobe should be cropped, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I think natural dobes are just as beautiful, but I do love my girls with their ears done. I dont push my opinion on anyone, guess I just thought others would give me the same respect I gave them. Oh well...their loss, I've had amazing dobes and I wouldnt change it for the world! Thanks for letting me vent guys!!!

I second what Lana said about the pups not being in pain after cropping. I picked up Scarlet on ear crop night and she was fine. Didn't complain while we were cleaning them or taping them. I think it's a matter of people being educated or not. I have had people stop me on our walks and say "aww she got her ears cropped she's pretty.... and others say "ohh why does she have antlers". I also had a kid say to his mom "why does the puppy have band-aids on her ears" the mom's like "because she hurt her ears I guess?" and looks at me asking the question.. lol. Once I educated all my friends and family about ear cropping though and they have seen the process, they now know it really isn't that big of a deal. I also had a hard time deciding between leaving her ears natural or cropped. We went with cropped because to us, it gives a more regal look, and we wanted our first dobe to have that look. Who knows, we may go natural for the next one Jess, good for you for deleting her! To put that in her facebook status is soo unnecessary. She could have said something privately to you if she really wanted too!!

Don't blame you for being angry. When Jack's ears were posted, we were never confronted directly, but we were pretty sure that, at least initially, a few of the folks at the park went home and muttered privately about the "cruelty" of cropping. But as they got used to seeing him and it became obvious that he was an active, happy little hooligan who was in absolutely no pain, I like to think that they revised their opinion.
We occasionally run into the same sort of thing when he's wearing his prong collar. Some people do a doubletake when they realize what it is. Then they see Jack bouncing around, completely oblivious to it, and it quickly becomes a non-issue. And now that we've bought him a black prong, people rarely even notice it.
One older (even older than we are -- LOL) toffee-nosed Englishwoman, who was walking an ancient beagle, once took it upon herself to lecture us on the cruelty of the prong. We thanked her for her comments but suggested that she really should educate herself before voicing her opinion. She harumphed and walked on. We probably didn't change her mind, but maybe next time, she'll hesitate before offering gratuitous comments.

I respect people who make either decision to stay natural or crop. It's a personal choice and you will find strong feelings either way. I totally respect both sides and the ability to make the choice. My personal choice is pretty clear, just look at my boy and the 4 before him. I've never been singled out or critized for it though. Could be because most people looking at me think I'm a scary dude because of my size and demeanor, but I'm actually not what i appear to be. I'm a big softie and those that really know me will confirm that.
Interesting about the prong. I started using one with Zeus II and Zeus III I guess I'm more lazy as I work with the choke and a long lead too but it seems he's so good walking with the prong and a short hand loop from an older collar I just keep going back to it.
I've been questioned a few times by people about the prong collar, and a few times I happened to have a 6' lead also with me so I would make the offer to have then put the prong on me on my leg and give me a correction and the offer was there for them to do the same on themself. Many looked in amazement but I have had a few take me up on the offer and they were amazed that it wasn't what they thought it would be when trying it themselves. The trainer back when for Zeus II introduced me to a prong that same way and put it on me and said ok give it a tug and see how it feels.
I try and educate when the opportunity arises and not be seen as a "Know it all or bloehard" It's amazing how opinionated many people can be and fight about it too, when their information is based on total mistruths and false tales.
How many times have you heard or been asked or told about "Warlock" or "King" dobermans? Zeus III is not huge but he is within standard, so with him I get told about the"Buddy's uncles friends neighbour" who had a Warlock or a King Doberman. When I had Zeus II he was a big guy over standard and I was asked lots if he was a King or Warlock doberman.

Oh I know Gary! I used to get that question with Gilda because she was bigger. They would say, oh that a warlock eh? People can be so misinformed sometimes it's scary!

It was a very immature statement. My response would have been this; "Much better to threaten murder, so much more humane...lol.... hypocrite!"

Seriously though eh. I mean talk about a sick individual that needs some counseling. 'Gee, I don't like what you're doing because it personally offends me and my ignorant ideas. So I think you deserve to be hung by the neck until dead'.... rotflmao!
