Your dogs are too beautiful! Love them.
I need advice... I'm torn about weather I should leave my puppy's ears natural or not. I like both, though I really love the cropped look, and if I were to have Monica crop them I definitely have the time and dedication enough to take care of them. My Lab/ mix of course has natural ears so, I've been leaning toward having Monica go ahead and crop her. What do you guys think? I know many of you have both.

I like both, though I really love the cropped look, and if I were to have Monica crop them I definitely have the time and dedication enough to take care of them. My Lab/ mix of course has natural ears so, I've been leaning toward having Monica go ahead and crop her. What do you guys think? I know many of you have both. This is probably the hottest topic of debate amongst Doberman owners. I see Lisa has Gino and her new pup natural so she obviously likes natural. Carol who has Monty from a previous litter is natural and has Petey from another breeder cropped. Barb and Kerrie have Dante and Kazi both cropped. The list goes on and many times the choice is a very hot topic and one of total loyality of the owner for their choice. Honestly it comes down to personal taste and likes of the owner. I mean no disrespect for anyone who has a doberman with natural ears and if they are happy, then I'm happy for them. My personal taste and opinion is a doberman just does not look like a doberman with out cropped ears. There is nothing more regal looking then beautiful cropped ears matched to the head and standing erect. I'm not sure of your choice of colour but when you have a red and tan doberamn many people don't even realize it's a doberman and add natural ears and people just think it's a nice dog and have no idea it's a doberman. I have had 3 reds and 2 blacks and all 3 reds were cropped and docked and yet I was always asked by people.."what kind of dog is that? or is that a doberman? I've never seen one such a rich colour aren't they always black?" So if you want people to know your dog is a doberman the cropped ears are doberman no doubt. if you are getting a red and tan and want to reduce doubt your dog is a doberman again cropped ears are doberman no doubt. If you are considering any showing the majority of the dogs in the ring are cropped so consider that. Then there is length of crop. I have had 3 pups.... a red shorter crop, a black med crop and now Zeus from Monica with a tall show crop. My preference is the tall show crop of our current Zeus hand down. The 2 dobermans before the 3 pups were more inbetween short and medium. Yes it's a pain posting and it's a worry hoping the ears will stand properly. The pups could care less about the posts and get used to it very quickly. In fact it's good bonding and getting the puppy accustomed to be handled etc the posting process. Monica's method is really good and well detailed in her manual and the trick is having the right supplies and with them it's easy to catch on. So again it's a matter of personal choice. Owners will be passionate either way for their choice. Those with natural ear doberman reading my comments again, I mean no disrespect to you and I know you are as passionate about natural ears as I am about cropped.

Thanks Gary, I appreciate your point of view. I think that I will have them cropped, simply because I think that that look is what really got me interested in dobermans in the first place. Aside from that I think I will really enjoy that bonding time with her while posting her ears. I would love her just the same, but I think I would kick myself if I didn't. After all if that's what drew me to her to begin with. ;D

I always had Dobermans with natural ears. My image of a perfect Doberman is a bit different That's not look I like in Dobermans. They amaze me with their intelligence devotion and loyalty. Being fearless and willing to defend owners they are loving and gentle at home. When people say they would not own a Doberman if ear cropping becomes illegal I am shocked. Is that what the most attractive in Dobermans?! That's a personal choice Heather. If you like a cropped look go for it. I don't think posting ears are the best bonding time with your puppy. Your hands would be full with other fun and not so much fun stuff

I would own a doberman with or with out natural ears, but since I am given a preference I think I will have her cropped. If cropping were to become illegal I would still have gotten a doberman, I love the breed just the same. This may be the only chance I ever get to have a preference since I normally adopt my pets.

I think you are right. I still can't believe it's really happening, I know it will be here before I know it but I'm really having a hard time waiting.

Poor Asha with taped natural ears. We will remove the tape tomorrow. Her ears are not "flying" anymore Oh Lisa, you make me proud! I saw the photos with the one ear starting to stick-up. As I thought to write you to tell you to tape down her ears, I see you already did it! Did you have to tape Gino when he was a baby as well? Asha is a very lovely puppy, you know she was one of my front runners when I was deciding on the keeper female. So many nice pups between Juno x Rogun, but my hardest choice in the females was between orange/black (Nika), light green (Kazi), and yellow/teal (Asha). It wasn't easy to come to that conclusion either. I would still show any of the others in a heartbeat! So here's keeping my fingers crossed, that you step into the show ring in AB with your natural eared beauty! If she turns out the way I suspect she will, she'll have no troubles at all to earn a championship. I'd love to be there to watch. But I will be busy with Kazi and Nika on this end. We can compare notes as we go along. Did you make it to the SchH club yet? Maybe Asha can chew on something else other then her brother? ha-ha.

I didn't tape Gino. His ears were always correct. Here is my princess after ears taping.

Asha is a character as you see They don't train puppies in our Sch club. I need to find other options. We do tugging and training at home. I am using Balabanov method. Asha knows sit, down, come and sit, stay. We will start heal soon. It's not perfect yet. I don't have high expectations for 3 months old puppy. The messages are sent to a few local show handlers. I want to evaluate Gino and Asha. Aslo I would like to take handling classes. So far so good... we enjoy each other

AWeeeeeee....I just love seeing pictures of Asha.....Kazi is growing sooo fast. We can't keep up! It's an amazing process to watch.
As for ear choice, natural or cropped, well.......we didn't have a choice with Dante as he was 10 weeks old and his ears had already been cropped when we chose him. So, now we had the choice with Kazi......and let me tell you I was on the fench post up to the last night on which way to go.....ask Monica. I'm getting an email from her telling me I had until 9am the morning of the surgery to decide! Yikes!!!!
Having never been thru the initial stages after surgery, I was shocked and upset at what I realized the dogs go thru. There is definately pain, blood, .......not having gone thru this with Dante, I was totally naive. Totally naive. Definately extra work is involved in having two dogs, as the older one wants to lick the wound to heal it, which is the worst thing that can happen as the ears are still stitched. What a time trying to get Dante to stop! 1 week of constantly being on him when they played together.....then the stitches come out, and he wants to continue trying to heal them. AARGGHGHHHHHHH....there is definately still a part of me that wishes I had left them natural......she would have been Monica's first female dog to capture a championship with natural ears.
It was definately a look that I was after, but our next dog (yes I did say that Kerrie..lol) will be natural. I can't let another dog go thru that. As for the posting, they do get used to it, but it does bother them to some degree, I believe. If they're on too tight, they teeter to one side while shaking their head trying to remove them....eventually you get them to stand straight, and hopefully the tips don't curl....Dante's do, and we feel that it makes him look just like his Mama...and it will make no difference in the show ring.
So, it is definately a personal preference....and wait til you hear all the comments while you're posting about your dog.....1) what happened to its ears? 2) we can tune him/her in and get better reception on our tv 3) what kind of dog is that? 4) why did you do that? 5) can we get a check on the weather conditions? after a while the comments do get tiring.....
So, good luck on your decision re the ears. I just wanted to share with you my struggles in making the decision. Kazi has gone thru this to satisfy my vanity....plain and simple!

Kerrie and Barbara,
Wow, that may be the most well worded, honest, argument I've herd yet! Thank you for being so honest. I'm still on the fence however. Why can't this be an easy decision? I was so certain I wanted to crop till about a week ago. Can I play eni meanie mineie mo? On one hand you have that look you see in movies and in pictures on the internet. It's what draws most people to the doberman to begin with (including myself). Then you have people also like me who want to do whats best for the dog not just for vanities sake. What makes it worse is you are given a choice. lol! What to do, what to do! I'm really going to have to do some soul searching on this one.
