Hey I just wanted to give eveyone a tip. Long ago I started to clip less and grind more with Zeus's nails. My wife got me a cheap PediPaws Nail grinder and I've been using it for about a year. It's eats batteries like bubble gum and discs too. It takes forever and to be honest after a while I would have to still nip with the clippers to get nails back and then back to the Pedipaws grinder.
The last couple times I nipped with the clipper I got a nail close to the quick, close enough that now when Zeus even sees me going for the clipper he's gone.
Well yesterday I finally decided to get a decent nail grinder. I wanted something without cheap battery power but with a decent rechargable battery pack & charger and a nice size of sanding wheel that was easier to work with on the nails.
I was looking at Home Depot and most were too expensive and overkill for doing dogs nails. I had a look at Petsmart and they had a nice Dremel brand Model 7300 for $49. The sanding discs are reasonable too and I've seen them in many different tool departments.
Honestly the cheap PediPaws I spent more than the cost of the new Dremel for batteries and grinding discs in the last 6 months.
I used the new Dremel this morning and WOW!! It's cuts like butter and does an amazing job. I do a paw at a time and just go back and forth across the nails not to grind too long on each nail and then on to the next foot. It took less time to do all 4 paws and remove more than the old PediPaws took to do one paw.
I can't believe I stuck with that PediPaws junk for so long. Don't ever buy the PediPas one it's junk. The Dremel one is really nice and reasonable and works well.
I know some people are awesome with clippers but my experience has not been good and Zeus hates it. I guess the clippers put pressure on the quick even if you aren't close enough to actually cut it. Zeus accpeted grinding much more than any clipping.

YOU ARE RICH!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D Just Kidding! The girl in PetSmart tried that pitch for me that I could get Zeus's nails done there no problem. I don't know the cost but comparing to a Dremel that cost $50 and will last for years I'm sure I think I'm money ahead doing it myself. I have been doing his nails at least once a week and now with this new Dremel being so nice I will be able to quickly touch them up a couple times a week very easy. If we do take a stab at some shows again I need to do it myself for sure, so his nails are right for the ring. Honestly it's good bonding too that the dog allows you to do it. Like Chris says - "I'm the Master that's the Slave"

Hey Gary, Chris started out with a post that had some pics of you doing Zeus's nails, but she just hit the quick reply that didn't give the option to attach files. Tell her to try again, it was a nice post, she really should share it. When your grinding nails with a rotary tool (Dremel) you really must use a stone bit and not the sandpaper bits. I was going to show you the bit that I use when I saw you on the week-end actually, thought I already did show that one to you though. LOL, maybe you were just to taken by my Dremel and didn't notice the stone.....lol. The sandpaper bits go dull almost right away, maybe two grooming uses and then its no good. Plus they are very coarse and don't leave a nice smooth finish. It also takes longer to grind the nail down because the bits lose their grit and that becomes uncomfortable for the dog. So the smaller grinding stone is the best one to use, and here's a pic so you can see what it looks like; www.plumbersurplus.com/images/prod/5/Dremel-932-rw-95652-161533.jpg The stone bits cost a "bit" more (lol, pardon the pun), but I have been using the same bit for years... and I do a LOT of nails! I bought a replacement bit years ago, still in the package because my old one is still doing the job without a problem. I'd say 1 stone bit would cost around $8, and that will last longer then 100 sandpaper sleeves.

No I didn't notice you used a stone, but I remember seeing you touch up Rogun's nails in Simcoe and Beamsville before the shows and I remember how awesome your dremel was working!! That's when I knew I had to change mine to a better one and my PediPaws was really a POS I have air die grinders and rotary tools and I used to port snowmobile cylinders. metal cutting tool, stone, sanding disc....that's always the order I used porting cylinders, and the order for material removal. I also have a small diamond dresser for cleaning the stones so they are like new again!!! SUPRISE!! I bet you have never seen one! You just give the stone a small touch as it's turning and back and forth and the wheel surface is like new again!! I'll throw it in my pocket if you want to touch up your stone when we meet. Let me know what grit of stone you use. From the picture and the colour it's a coarser type of stone. I have to look in my tool chest as I have stones, but I think most of mine are the finer white stone I can easily grab a couple new proper stones and switch. I touched up I Zeus's nails twice now with the new dremel and you can see the disc doesn't cut as quick as the 1st go. I'll tell Chris to post the pictures, I remember her showing me and they are funny!

Yup that's the one the smaller one the 1st link but I got it at Petsmart and it was $49 without all the cutters. It came with the wrench, the mandrel with I think 5 sanding cones for the mandrel and the battery charger. So although I didn't get all the other stuff it was $10 cheaper. I have air powered die grinders and all kinds of those steel cutters and various grinding stones etc but for a larger air powered die grinder. CTC slays me because I went in the one in town here and they had jack on display? If I would have seen that kit I would have bought it there! I'll never use all the other stuff anyway and already have all that stuff for my die grinder. I just wanted something for dog's nails. if you saw the tool chest in my garage almost as tall as me and about 5 feet wide, then the travelling tool box for races, then each muscle car has a compact tool kit, you would understand why I have no problems adding to my tool collection. Tim "The ToolMan" Taylor has nothing on me. I used to keep track of the values and then gave up because I didn't want to know anymore!

I use a Dremel tool from Ren's Pets. Trafalgar rd. Great for doing Lilly's nails. i clip a bit and round and shape them up. I usually get more off with the dremel than with cutting. I'm also very careful with it. I've been using it for years.

We got the dremel Gary recommended. We did Scarlet's nails about a week after she came home, she did ok, we managed to get the dremel over every nail. We have been attempting though for the last couple of days again and it's getting difficult!! We did get one paw done last night though.
