Drum roll, please.
In response to popular demand (LOL), I've attached a pic of the finished coat repair. The photo skews the shape a little, but the patch is actually a perfect square, positioned so that it looks like a pocket right in the middle of the back (the tear was actually slightly off centre). In the end, I chickened out and left the coat and the hunk of fabric with Grace, our local (and excellent) seamstress. I just asked her to do what she thought was best -- and this is what she came up with. Her charge? $8, which ended up being reduced to $6.32 because she didn't want to change a $20 and $6.32 was all Bill had in his pocket. Ya can't beat that! And for those who are interested in fabric . . . the white fusing on the underside of the black fabric apparently isn't, as I mistakenly thought, waterproofing. A member of our SchH club is a fashion designer (Gary, you probably met his wife when you delivered her dog's jacket), and he told me that the fabric on its own is very slippery, so the manufacturer adds the fusing to stop the fabric from sliding around when it's being cut. The waterproofing is apparently sprayed on (and will last through about 50 washings). Attachments:

That's great....and as for waterproofing, anyone can purchase a waterproofing spray (get the one with the silicone) which will add extra protection.
