Was thinking this morning about Jack and his wearing of Big Ol' Fred's hand-me-down winter apparel. Fred, our previous Dobe, was a very special (rescued) guy who died in 2008, and his coats aren't the only things that we recycled when Jack the Brat came along (some of which, such as Fred's car safety harness, the little bum has since destroyed).
But the one thing that I can't bear to haul out and use with Jack is one of Fred's leads — the one we used nearly all the time. This seems a little silly, because it's a beautiful English leather leash that grew incredibly soft and supple over the years so that it's beautifully worked in and very comfortable in the hand. It would be great for Jack, but I associate it so closely with Fred that, three years after his death, I still get teary if I come across it when digging through the box in which I stored his old gear — and I just can't bring myself to use it again.
Anyone else feel a deep sentimental attachment to something like this?

When we first moved into this house 7 yrs ago, our elderly neighbour had a Doberman and his name was Kazan. Kerrie ended up being Kazan's alpha, while our neighbour continued to be his caregiver...lol. Everyday, Kazan would wait for Kerrie to come home from work so that they could go for walks, or he would just come over and visit. They shared this incredible bond....and it was because of him that we got Dante. Approximately 6 months after we brought Dante home, Kazan passed on.
Shortly after, our neighbour gave Kerrie something that belonged to Kazan by which to remember him by.....his collar......and it still smelled of him.
We tried it on Dante, but of course it was too large. Dante never wore it more than a few times, and now it is tucked safely away.

Dyanne I feel your pain... I can not use Bailey's (my Doberman) leash on any of my dogs. It's just hung up next to his urn. He passed away 3 years ago.
It may get better ... I don't cry anymore when I look at his urn. I smile thinking about him.

I`ve seen a few dogs over the bridge and each dog has something special that I don`t want to share with any other dog. I think that can be different for everyone, and for each dog too. For Maxi it was a stuffed toy and her collar. For me I`d say the collar is the most personal thing i attach to most, mainly because its something that they wore all the time. Gosty also got buried with his favourite toy, because he just loved laying in the middle of the yard under the tree, that is where he is buried. All my other dogs have been cremated, so something is usually laying close to, or on the urn. As you can imagine I have collected a few urns over the years and it never gets any easier to see one of my friends pass. I think this next couple years will be particularly tough for me. Indi is closing in on 14 years old, Isis will be 12 in June, Syris is over 9, Rhody and Argus will be 8 this year, Phoenix is over 8, but as many know I already had a close call with her a few years back... so I count every day as a blessing. Then there`s my daughter`s boxer Fauna who is now 11 years old. I`m very thankful that my dogs are seeing a long life, but as many of my doberfriends know, its never long enough. I once had someone say to me "well its not so bad for you when you loose a dog because you have so many". my answer "well you have 3 kids, does that mean it will be easier for you if you lost one of them". I know, I am a crazy dog lady...lol. Dyanne, you ever think of having something made from that leash, like perhaps use the strands in a hanging basket, etc? Attachments:

Oh, and in case anyone ever thought "where'd they come up with the name Kazi".....it was from our neighbours doberman, Kazan.
He is forever in our thoughts, and hearts!
