Hey guys, Just a question about your doberkids and their manners in regards to greeting guests at the door. Teah has always been very polite when someone comes to the door, but lately, and only like the last 2 weeks she gets very excited and jumps at their face, she doesnt bite or anything. I know from experience that dobes are very happy to meet people and most of mine have always had some level of excitement at the door but I was hoping to maintain Teahs manners when it comes to greeting. Any tips??

I don't know whether this will help, but here's what we have done with Jack. He has a solid sit, and he knows that he must hold it until he's released. (Holding until released really is the key, so sitting until released is something we practise — whenever he's in a sit, we try very hard to remember to release him so that he gets the message repeatedly and consistently. He doesn't get to decide for himself when to break a sit, or a down for that matter. He must wait until he's released — or given another command, such as "heel.")
The next thing is that he never goes through the front door without first sitting (and waiting to be released). So he's accustomed to sitting when facing the door. I guess this becomes some kind of conditioned response. So that when someone comes to the door, we tell him to sit — and he does this because he's already perfectly used to doing it.
If he started to forget his manners, I think I would place a leash in a handy spot by the door and slip it on him when the bell rings. Then I'd require him to settle into a sit before opening the door (the guests might have to wait at the door a little longer than usual). When he's released, I would have the leash in hand, so that if he tried to jump on the guest(s), I could stop him quickly and return him to a sit until he settled down and was ready to say hello politely.
Sounds good in theory, doesn't it? LOL.
