Wooo, hoo! Thanks, Monica, for starting a G-litter thread. Jack is very proud of his sister, Cynder, and her beautiful S-litter pups. Jack loves tracking. But he loves protection even more!

We're very impressed with Jack, and his photos! He's a talented lad. And Cynder is lovely . . . Tory as well. Tyrion and I aren't allowed any fun for a good long while. I'm not allowed to share any food with him, and it is excruciating. I have a cooking website and love to bake treats, but even flavoured toothpaste is verboten in this elimination diet. Tyrion is wondering why I've suddenly become such a big meanie. I've been reading about food allergies; it's one problem I hadn't had with Dobes before. This is the most concise article I've found yet: www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2082&aid=143On the other hand, I'm no longer trying to scrape mushy poop off the ground and vaccuuming relentlessly due to non-stop shedding, so at least some good has come of it. Winter's bound to be better.

Hmmm ok I am noticing a trend.... Didn't realize all these dogs were from the same litter and they all seem to be the ones I would steal when their owners weren't looking. Watch out for that Tyrion if you come Sunday, I might just leave my car door open! LOL. G litter looks awesome!!! I love the shots of Jack "working" too Dyanne As for the beauty Cynder! she is one gorgeous girl. Monica I see a lot of Scarlet in Cynder's face though, are they related somehow close?

Winter's bound to be better. Aw, poor Tyrion. But it sounds as if he has landed in the best possible place -- with someone who is determined to do what's needed to get him sorted. I read the article, and I'm soooo glad we didn't have to go through that with Jack. His (probably) food issues resolved pretty quickly and painlessly by comparison. And you must let us all in on your website. I know that a number of people on this forum enjoy cooking. (I'm not one of them . . . Bill does most of the cooking in our family. I just enjoy eating.)

I'm sure Tyrion would love to go home with Scarlet too. Now I'm picturing Andreina in the Subaru commercial with a car full of Dobes instead of Huskies. Here's a link to my favourite ribs recipe: gourmand2go.com/coffee_rub.htmlAny feedback on recipes or pages is greatly appreciated! It's odd how I seem to end up with a Dobe that's going through a medical problem I've recently suffered myself. I was able to help my last Dobe, Ariel, with her problems and it was epiphanic for me. Now with Tyrion, I can empathize and hopefully prevent his dermatitis from going any further. He was very itchy and has a self-inflicted wound on his hock. The vet doesn't want it covered at this point but we have to prevent any saliva from getting near it because it would set us back weeks in the healing process. He's half way through a course of Novolexin now. I have to watch him like a hawk. Tyrion hates his new food. He wants what I'm eating, even if it's just plain broccoli.

Everytime I went to Monicas for training, everyone would make sure I didn't take Rhody, Apollo or Tyrion when he first came to Monicas home ;D. I dream of a multi-dog house, but first things first is to get a place of our own lol. My mom would kill me if I brought home another .

It is curious about your dog(s) sharing the same ailments as you do. I have to wonder about environmental issues, because you' re not the first Dobie owner in Kitchener to run into issues. Tyrion didn't have any issues during his time here either. His coat was thin when I got him (he was on Kirkland food and that did dry out his coat... and almost any other Dobe that I know who eats it). But he wasn't itchy, and his coat was improving day by day.
Not to start a debate, but as a Canine (Naturopathic) Nutritionist since early 90's, I have my own theories on apparent food related allergies. I actually doubt the automatic conclusion that any dog is allergic to any meat. They are meant to eat meat, but they eat a lot of other things that can work against their ability to metabolize various components of their food. I agree with Lisa, meat, oats, berries (and other veggies) should not cause a dog issues unless they are getting too much of something, fat, protein, etc. But there is a whole lotta stuff a dog can be sensitive to.
Itchy skin, first thing to look for is yeast products. Next is glutens, wheat, preservatives, colours, pulps, various vegetable proteins, etc, etc. Tyrion had a lot of different meats when he was here, he showed no signs of sensitivity... at least I can say for sure that I didn't see any classic signs of chicken allergies.
Guck in the eyes after a walk can come from blowing seeds, dust, pollutants, etc. it can also be from certain shrubbery, grass fertilizer and seeds, among many other things, including once again, yeast (be it candida in his body, or yeast by-products in his food). Again, since there wasn't a problem here, it can only suspect Ragweed or another environmental irritants.
Reds can have more sensitive skin. But from what i read here you believe Tyrion to be sick or to have an inferior immune system. With a genetically wide open pedigree this is not very likely. Weak immune systems go hand in hand with inbreeding, and the G-litter was a result of an outcross.... meaning no familial resemblances between mother and father.
There are however several different coat types in our breed that nobody goes into with regards to genetic testing (density, length, coarseness, etc). Tyrion he has a very short coarse coat. My experience has been that coarse coated dogs tend to thin faster, and shorter coats have more skin contact, which increases risks of contact dermatitis. Funny thing is, the coarse coat is actually the correct coat type for our breed.... sigh.
Again, when an allergy is suspected, feed a basic protein and grain food, then add 1 ingredient every week or two until you find the things that have an ill effect on him. Altering PH will have an effect on yeast within the body, and that definitely causes an itchy dog. So looking into your dog's alkalinity might be a route worth taking.
As i mentioned up top, one of my clients (Ian) lives in Kitchener and has 2 Dobes with constant skin issues. His female is from another breeder, his male that he got from me is not at all related to Tyrion.
Marion, maybe you should think of moving... for both your sakes. i can tell you of many people who have done just that, and found it worthwhile. Always sick till they moved, seriously something to think about.

Finally some pics of Jack working. I'll add these on his webpage! I know, I know. LOL. Bill was always pretty much the only camera-savvy person at the club, so we have hundreds of great pix of everyone else and their dogs -- and hardly any of Bill and Jack. But the club now has a new member who was a pro photographer (though of studio shots), so Bill has someone besides me (i.e., someone competent) to hand the camera off to on occasion.

Marion, I was so hoping that you would have come out to play with us on Sunday and meet Jack, as well as Tory, Tyrion's momma.

Whenever I start thinking that Jack, at 3-1/2, is finally all grown up, he does something that says, "Not on your life."
Last night was a case in point. After training, I went upstairs to change. Jack, of course, went with me, so while I was changing, I threw my sheepskin slippers, which are now about the only things in the house that are still not safe in his presence, onto the middle of the bed, where he couldn't reach them.
He knows very well that the slippers are forbidden, but he still stood with his chin on the bed staring at them longingly. Then, clearly hoping I wouldn't notice, he very carefully placed his right front paw on the bed. Knowing what was coming, I said, "Leave it."
Like a good boy (notice I said "like" a good boy), he removed his head and paw from the bed, gave me a guilty Jack smile, and came wiggle waggling over for a bum scratch, which he got. Then he nonchalantly headed out of the bedroom and down the hall, as if he were saying, "La, la, la. See, I'm no longer the least bit interested in your stupid slippers."
But this was a ruse. I figured this out when I heard the thunder of Doberman feet coming back down the hall at warp speed. As Jack flew through the bedroom door, he took a huge leap and launched himself onto the middle of the bed. Quick as a wink, he grabbed a slipper, turned on a dime, and flew back down the hall with his treasure.
It happened so fast that all I could do was bellow. Fortunately Bill, who was on his way up the stairs, managed to get a knee out to foil the escape and rescue the slipper!
Meanwhile, I cracked up laughing. Devious little brat! But this is exactly what I love about Dobermans — and about Jack. (Maybe I need therapy, LOL.)
