I can see why you're smitten with Dobes, Dyanne. Tyrion seems to have decided that I can handle intruders on my own, while he's in charge of the welcoming committee. Ha! Same with Tuula... if an intruder came in our house she'd probably just offer them one of our shoes hehehe By the way, on a different note, where get these doggie sweaters? Do you just make them yourself or can you buy them somewhere, Tuula has been getting cold at night for the past few days :s

Funny how Dobes can go from looking so noble one moment to cute the next. The blanket was Ariel's and had one hole in it; I used to cover her bed with it. Since Tyrion has inherited it, it's developed quite a number of holes. I think that when he sees one hole he figures that's its true purpose. Too bad, because it's a very attractive snow leopard pattern. I try to get mill ends of faux fur material because if it's good quality, it doesn't fill your house with lint when your Dobe shakes it. Also, the furry texture is appealing to predators. The sweatshirt is also a hand-me-down that I bought in a pet store; it was called "The Kramer". But I know there are online places that sell pajamas for sighthounds. You can get them with legs and hoodies too. Too bad the forum doesn't have a "buy and sell" section--I have loads of gear I don't use. Stuff that didn't work out for a particular Dobe or doesn't fit, or sometimes I just start collecting things I don't really need! One thing I was just thinking about making is a Dobe balaclava. Those snow squalls last winter were brutal.

Thought you might be interested in this, Marion. A post on DT sent me trawling through Jack's pedigree on Dobequest, and then I found this photo of Astor of Westphalia, who is one of Jack's — and Tyrion's — great-great-etc.-grandfathers. Astor was born in 1929, so I imagine this pic was taken sometime in the 1930s. Silly as it is, I've been examining the photo to see if I can spot resemblances to Jack. Attachments:

Very interesting, Dyanne!
Tyrion certainly doesn't have the wide front of Astor, but he has a much deeper chest. And Tyrion's muzzle looks just a bit more Euro.

Had a lovely experience yesterday — and can't resist sharing. It was a beautiful day, so many more people were out at the area where we often see no one when we take Jack out for his afternoon hike.
We were playing fetch and caught the attention of a woman who was jogging some distance from us. She suddenly stopped dead and watched with a huge smile on her face as Jack ran out to get the ball and then ran back to us with it.
When the woman decided to approach, a little timidly, we put Jack in a down and waited to see what was on her mind. Turns out that she was a newcomer to Canada. Her English wasn't great, and she clearly knew nothing about dogs, but she was blown away by how beautiful Jack is. (And hey, who isn't inspired by the beauty of a Doberman in full flight?)
So Bill continued throwing the ball, while she watched and chatted with me. She was also knocked out by how well-behaved Jack is — little did she know! At one point, Jack started to approach her, and she became fearful, so Bill called him back to the game. Again, she was blown away by the fact that he listened and did as he was told.
Who can resist someone who raves not only about how beautiful your dog is but also about how well-behaved he is? We were chuffed — and very proud of Jack for putting his best foot forward.

Tyrion still isn't fetching, but at least on that warm rare day he was well-behaved--in a good mood I guess. His biggest challenge is the recall. The docs I got with him indicate that off leash he will run away, and I can believe that because the first time I took him to the dog park he had the "you can't catch me now" attitude as soon as I removed his leash. But we've been working on it, and that day he would come to me if I just looked at him--even when he'd found a frisky Portie to play with! So, the training, persistence, and patience--and maybe some nagging--really do pay off.

On another happy note, the vet made me feel good yesterday when she raved about how great Tyrion looks and told me I'd done a great job.
But, the best thing was when she asked if I walk him alot, and then told me he has a "big booming heart".
We've been getting more into running too, and I've found that trail running on a flexi works well because I don't have to worry about him tripping me.
I love his ear crop because, in a heel position, he can hear a whispered command. On the flexi he can hear me when I start or stop running. And of course the ear crop is beautiful, too.

Well, we know how great the G-litter dogs are. Our vet, too, thinks Jack is pretty special (but then, she also adored our previous guy, whose life she saved).
Whenever we go in, everyone in the office comes out to say hello -- just so they can see Jack smile. He causes quite the sensation! And of course, the more they laugh, the more he wags his tail and wiggles his butt. And the bigger his smile gets. He can be quite the attention hog.

AWww, you're lucky, Dyanne! I miss the smiles. I do have pics of my last Dobe, Ariel, smiling. When she woke up after a nap she must've thought she hadn't seen me for a long time, because she'd grin at me. And she'd have everyone in our agility class giggling when she'd fly by me grinning.
I wonder if red Dobes smile.

Indi would give a lippy grin, but not a full 42 pearly white smile. Kaia is by far my biggest smiler of the bunch. Hmmm, lets start a new thread and see who's got a smiling red.

No, sadly, it's exactly the same as before the corrective surgery. I rarely take pics when it's flopped. Interestingly, switching him to the Orijen seemed to make more difference to the ear stance than the surgery! You can still see the hair line where the scar is. I do have a photo I took while Tyrion was watching two young female dogs cavorting in front of him, and his ear is flopped. Other times it might be up when he's sleeping. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, but I've gotten used to his oddities and view them as cute. My Couch?

Okay, it's the big test. I spring cleaned up my office yesterday and decided that it was time to set the wastebasket, which has been perched high on a table for the four years since Jack's arrival, back on the floor beside my desk.
So far, he doesn't seem to have noticed that there's a container with tempting balled up paper, dirty kleenexes, etc. within easy reach. We'll see how long that lasts!
Love the pic of Tyrion on the couch. Hardly spoiled at all, that dog. LOL.

Thanks, Dyanne. Most dogs only have a loveseat! lol I've tried to get a photo when he's lying on his back, but as soon as he notices the camera he rolls onto his side. Sounds like you need some high-tech surveillance equipment to keep an eye on that waste basket. Tyrion's the first Dobe I've had that I've trusted with kleenex, but I can't leave anything with a trace of food on it. He will shred a paper napkin to get the smidgeon that has a hint of ribs. I was shocked when I first got Tyrion that he stole a chicken bone from my plate when my back was turned for a fraction of a second. I had to reach down his throat to retrieve it. Good thing I have long arms!
