Hi everyone,
I need some help/advice. Porscha is STILL peeing in her crate. She is a yr old. She doesnt have accidents in the house for a long time now but she somehow still manages to pee in her crate. We minimize her water at night, we let her out right before we go to bed, we let her out as soon as we wake up, but somehow its still wet! Bladder infection is ruled out as well. Also, half of her crate is still blocked off because its a really big crate but it never made a difference. She doesnt poop in her crate since she was a little baby but the peeing is driving me bananas.
Im wondering, is it possible that dogs pee while they sleep? Im not sure if this would be considered incontinence because she doesnt have accidents anywhere else. No dribbles or anything. Im so confused and dont know what to do anymore. I never thought I'd have to still be doing laundry for a dog lol
Any ideas?

I have the same issues with Asha and she is almost 2. Some dogs have smaller bladder and can not hold urine for more than 5-6 hours. Try to change her schedule and feed her not later than 3PM and no water after 5-6PM. Unfortunately you need to let her outside every 5 hours or use X-pen and pee pads to manage it. I did not find any better solution yet. Maybe Monica will chime in....

How much water exactly are you allowing her to drink in any given day? When do you cut her off? That's important information for Monica which she will need...her "outside" schedule...how often you walk her....what's she do when she goes out? Are you with her? Is she is the yard alone?

Is it just at night in her crate? Or is it during the day also when she is crated.
Have you noticed it's just when she is sleeping..?

Nikolina when Porscha stayed with us she peed in her crate the first 3 nights, and that was it. I actually did the opposite of restricting her water... I gave her free reign of the water. The first few days she tried to drink every drop in the bowl and then she'd clear out of the toilet (Reyna doesn't even go in the bathroom, so she got in a few times when we didn't close the door). After that, she'd go over to the bowl and just drink what she wanted without clearing the whole thing... and she stayed out of the bathroom! She arrived with us on Thurs night, and by Monday no more peeing. I took her out right before I went to bed, and then as soon as I got up. During the "peeing" days she would pee in the night (I noticed an area on her blankets that was still a little damp) and then she couldn't make it out of her crate without jumping around and peeing once she woke up. I don't have a scientific answer for why this worked, but it did. She even managed to trot around the apartment in the am while I hooked both girls up to leashes, then she was fine in the elevator and even waited til we got onto the grass to pee. Maybe Monica will chime in on this one?

Hi Jo,
Yes the water pigs can quench their thirst if allowed to do so. It means constant outings until they get over their obsession. It could be that Porche needed to flush out her bladder, and once that was achieved she was over her need. There also could be a hardness or mineral content causing issues at home that were not present in the treated city water when she was with you Jo. But you're not the first person to say that treating a dog with more water seemed to help.
As for peeing in the crate, its not as likely to be incontinence if its been happening since day one. Its also not likely to be immature bladder syndrome either, since she didn't pee in her crate during her stay with Jo. This type of messing is most likely behavioural.
I had a friend's pup here for boarding who was peeing in her crate at home. Like Porche with Jo, within 48 hours I had this puppy keeping her crate clean. When she returned home she returned to her dirty habit.
Oddly this same person's older female will also pee in the crate whenever there is a blanket in the crate. Not a full void, more of a marking. No blanket, no pee. So I know that there is nothing physically wrong with this female, because she can hold it, and does.
Breaking a female of habitual messing isn't easy. The first thing that I would try is taking away the blanket or bed from her crate and see how that works. She might mess a couple times, but will soon find it very uncomfortable and will teach herself that its better not to pee. so don't give up right away. But if she keeps messing even on the bare crate floor, then we'll have to look at plan B, which involves changing the environment.

It may be a behavior problem but not with my Asha. I tried everything possible. She had full access to the water. I never restricted it before. Asha is not a water pig. I was changing blankets in the crate. Then I decided not to lock her crate and see if it helps. Later I allowed her to sleep on the couch in the family room. Nothing helps. She pees next to the couch! A lazy brat to walk a few steps away.
The full urine and blood tests ruled out any health issues.
I changed her meal schedule two weeks ago. Our dog walker feeds her at 1PM. I restrict the water intake after 6PM. We walk her before the bed time. She has pee incidents every night... a bit less urine now due to her schedule changes.
What else can I do?
She doesn't have peeing incidents at daytime. She asks to let her out every 6 hours. I can not do it in the middle of night. I value my sleep... that's not an option for me.
My vet thinks Asha has a small bladder. She can not hold urine for more than 6 hours. It's frustrating but manageable.
Asha is my fourth Doberman and I have never experienced it before. She is my first female though....

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read my post and offer suggestions I think for Porscha it may be behavioural because if she is with me all day she lets me know when she has to go and wont have any accidents in the house. Its not even every night, maybe every other day or every third day. When she was younger it happened every day. I would come home at lunch during work to let the dogs out and to play a bit and there would still be pee in her crate. The time span I left them was 5 hours before lunch and then 3 hrs before I actually finished work. It was a nightmare but she is slowly growing out of it but not quite there yet. Here is where I think its behavioural for Porscha....Ive tested her sleeping on her bed, in the bedroom next to me and she didnt pee! Three nights in a row. No wet spot, not issues, she didnt even get up to go during the night and in the morning she would wait the entire time until we got up to let her out. I knew she was awake because Id pretend I was still sleeping lol I havent tried taking out the blankets, so I may try that. I dont want her to have free reign in the house while we are at work yet, I think she is still too young for that so I still need to keep her in the crate therefore Ill try taking blankets out. Maybe its not that she releases while she is sleeping...maybe she does it because of the excitement of me letting her out? Im also gonna try letting her have free reign of the water too! I want to test this theory. Maybe it works for me Is this a more common occurance in females compared to males? Zeus was trained really quickly, Porscha took way longer. Even my two little females gave me hell when training them . Thats why Im wondering if its a female thing

With Kazi, she isn't crated at night. Both Dante and Kazi sleep beside the bed on their own beds. Occasionally, she gets up and goes downstairs in the middle of the night to go outside....thankfully we are light sleepers, so she doesn't have accidents in the middle of the night. We don't restrict their water, so that's not a problem. They usually go outside before bed around 11-midnight, and then I'm awake within 6 hours, so we don't have issues.

I always find it amazing how each dog can be different within the same breeds too!! While some have issues with certain things, others wont. What works with one dog, wont work with another dog - I guess its much like people too I think for starters Im going to try not restricting the water. Im also going to let them sleep in the room on their beds during the weekend and hopefully I may see a difference after that. If I see this works, then maybe Ill just leave the door open to the crate and see if she will pee then, during work hours and night time.

She's a year old today....omg I just read that. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Porscha.
You are absolutely right about 2 dogs being different yet they are the same breed. That is also why I always suggest to people that they refer their questions to Monica. Just because you've raised 4 Dobermans does NOT make you an expert, except with your own dogs!
Dante can hold his pee far longer than Kazi can....I wouldnt' be stretching it to think that he could hold himself 4+ hours longer than Kazi. Why??? Good question, but it is what it is.

We go to the bed at 9:30pm and get up at 5:30am. If I stay longer and take her out at 11PM she is OK but that's not enough sleep for me. I talked to Monica about the issue. So far no progress Gino holds easy for 12 hours. Asha can hold only for 6 hours.... maybe 7 hours if we are lucky.

Amazingly, when it's raining outside, Kazi can hold her pee for up to 8 hours...easily. Go figure....

Well my lazy dog can go for her last pee at 9pm... Go in her crate til the next morning til 10 am lol... She is a weird one! But let me tell you that was not the case with puppyhood that was a nightmare. She would mess her crate all over every time we put her in!
