We saw our vet this aft and decided to try Trifexis. Apparently the manufacturer doesn't claim it kills ticks, but the vet told me she'd been to Belize treating dogs there and had products from all the manufacturers. Ticks dropped off dogs treated with the Trifexis.
If it happens that a tick appears I can take it into the vet to be tested and there is a vaccine against lyme.
The other thing the vet mentioned is that there's been a new strain of heartworm since Katrina that isn't killed by Interceptor, my previous favourite.
P.S.: Further reading reveals that Trifexis only kills ticks for two weeks after the dosage.

I use Revolution on Diesel. I haven't had any major problems with ticks and fleas - although I did find one tick on him last year and that's because we went hiking a lot. I do the garlic thing also. I'll probably stick to Revolution again this year - growing up in the Philippines I'm used to seeing ticks and removing them often from my dogs so it's no biggie for me.

. . . I do the garlic thing also. I'll probably stick to Revolution again this year - growing up in the Philippines I'm used to seeing ticks and removing them often from my dogs so it's no biggie for me. The "garlic thing"? What is that? We were so freaked by Jack's tick that we went to the vet to have it removed. LOL. I suspect that if we ever find another one, we'll do the same. Just not enough experience with removing them -- and terrified of doing it wrong and leaving the head stuck in his skin. And on a completely different topic, has Diesel been swimming at the Bluffs yet this year? We're hoping to get Jack out a few times before the summer hordes descend on the beach. But the lake must still be pretty cold. Yes? (I can't imagine Jack enjoying a swim in glacial water. He loves to swim, but he's no Asha!)

I called the vet today to book the dogs appointment and asked about the products they use. Our dogs are on Revolution, and the tick collar we use to enhance it is called Virbec. Unfortunately, they are on back order right now, but we can safely say that when we used this product, we had no ticks on our dogs. Hope this helps.

Update:
If anyone is travelling and spending time in The Grand Bend, Ipperwash, The Pinery, Bayfield areas.....the ticks are worse this year than in previous years.
Please make sure you are prepared for both yourself and your dog(s) as they have been spotted on both people and dogs.

Just thought I'd give an update on the flea/tick prevention. As you know we purchase the tick collar separately from our vet, and am happy to say that the 2 dogs haven't had any so far this year. They are very bad at The Bend, and not only animals are finding ticks on them...humans also.
