I have the Dogstra brand e-collar for my boy Quin and am very pleased with the product. It is waterproof and provides a greater distance of control (up to 1/2 mile) plus a broad intensity control. We live in a rural area and he is off leash most of the time on a local trail system. I usually only have to use the "vibration" mode to get him to respond. Saves yelling your head off....lol. I know of several dog owners locally who ended up with a Dogtra after having limited or no success with less expensive pet store brands. It was a good investment.

Everyone uses Dogtra lol. It was a bit too expensive for my taste. This SportDog brand works all the same... This brand was made for hunting dogs, is waterproof and the particular model we have goes up to 500 yards, you can also add other collars on to the remote and control up to 3 dogs with one remote. The functions are vibrate, beep and then separate shock functions from 1 - 7. We have never had to go past 3 for Scarlet as she's pretty sensitive.... Unlike the Dogtra which goes from 1 - 100.... A bit to many numbers to remember which setting you're on... in my opinion anyways. I just click back in forth between 1 - 3 depending what I feel I will need. Here's the link to the SportDOG website, we have it in camo but it's available in black. store.sportdog.com/wetlandhunter-425We ordered ours from Gun Dog Supply... I found it for you here in black if you're interested. www.gundogsupply.com/sd-425-fieldtrainer.html

We've used our Dogtra for nearly four years. Jack wears it every day when he's off-lead on hikes. His recall is very good, but the collar is our insurance. And for the first time in months, we had to use it last week when the little brat took off after two white-tailed deer. So I'm grateful to have it.
Ours is the 3500 NCP Super Series. Basic vibrate, as well as 123 different levels, so you can really fine tune it. It's also waterproof and has a range of a mile. It was expensive, but it came highly recommended and Bill found a lightly used one on e-Bay, so we got a bit of a deal. Jack loves the water so it has been around his neck in the river where we hike, in L. Ontario and in my sister's pond with no problems.
One of the best things about it (I hope) is that it can be refurbished relatively cheaply ($99-$150) if something goes wrong. We had started having a bit of trouble with ours, so we've just sent sent it in for the treatment. It's our first experience with this, so we'll see how it goes.
The collar came with two different sets of contact points, one for short-coated dogs like Dobes and longer ones for breeds with longer, heavier coats. We also bought -- and use -- what's called a comfort adapter that has more rounded contact points.
I don't know whether you've used an e-collar before, but if not, it's a really good idea to do some online research to find out how to introduce it or to have a trainer help you with this.

I bought the pet safe collar and have gone through 2 of them now. They cost $215.00 and I've had the same issue with both of them, on/off toggle falls inside the collar. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am looking it to both brands and will go from there. It's really helpful to have a place to ask these questions and get really helpful answers. Thanks again!
