A study was done about this behaviour in Dobermans and found to have links to genetics, and OCD triggers. I found this interesting because Magnum exhibits this hip sucking tendancy. An interesting read for those who have a Dobe who flank sucks, or blanket sucks. www.nytimes.com/2010/01/19/science/19dogs.html

Gino sucked his blanket as crazy before Asha's arrival. He stopped now. I don't believe it has a genetic trigger... just boredom.
I would prefer to hear they spend money on DCM, cancer, wobblers, etc

my older dog Bailey use to suck her flank, but i steeped tea and chilled it for 24 hours then used a cotton ball to soak the area. i did that 2 or 3 times and she stoped.

Interesting! Our previous Dobe went through what we call his flank-sucking period. Fortunately, he could be snapped out of it, and it didn't last. It was never particularly frequent, and as he aged, the behaviour disappeared completely.
But I've always wondered how much was nature and how much was nurture -- and I'm not sure we'll ever know the answer to that question.
