I was fortunate to be invited to the "Canandian Association For Professional Pet Dog Trainers" in Mississauga this weekend.
Some of the guest speakers were Sheri Lucas who has worked with Ceasar Milan. She lives in California where she has a 40 acre ranch and she specializes in dogs that have serious aggression issues. Her talk was about walking with a pack and how to add new dogs to the pack..
Robin Mcfarlane who is an authority on E-Collar training..Her mission is the see a paradigm shift on peoples views about the collars. At the beginning of her talk she had every one write down what they thought about E-collars and there were a lot of negative views but by the end of her 3 hour talk and demonstration she had changed an incredible amount of peoples opinions.
Dr.Dorothy Dunning did a presentation on the evolution of dogs..
Sarah Wilson who talked about women and dogs..Very, Very interesting.
They had an very interesting line up of other speakers also..I came home from the experience filled with a renewed passion about starting my new career in the dog training field..
So Monica I am ready when you to get our pups back into training.
I have to thank you Monica because it is because of you that I am going in this direction.

Thats great that you feel passionate about animal behaviour. We'll chat privately about where we're going to go from here. But you have some challenges ahead of you, that will earn some rewards that will rival some of the best experiences in your life.

Wow! This was Kerrie writing, I assume. Sounds like a terrific seminar . . . and congrats on your new career direction. Sooo exciting. Now we'll have to make extra sure that Jack is on his best behaviour when we're around you. LOL.
I'm an e-collar convert. A year ago, I was very negative about them, but we saw them being used -- judiciously -- in schutzhund and decided to try one with Jack on his daily off-lead runs, which are, believe me, essential to our sanity. We read up on its use, listened carefully to advice from schutzhund folk, and waited till he was 18 mos. old to try it out. When Jack's in prey drive, his recall disappears, and the e-collar has been a godsend. It has allowed us to get him off the long line, which we were never comfortable with for safety reasons. On many hikes, we never use it, but it has proven its worth several times. On one occasion, Jack took off like a shot after two young coyotes and would, I'm sure, have been long gone without the e-collar to persuade him to listen.
Cheers, Dyanne

I agree that the e-collar is a valuable training tool to add to one's kit. Use for distance recall is by far one of its most appreciated benefits for sure. Its like having a 500 foot reach to correct your dog. Its also great for correction related to counter surfing, window talk, etc. But in the wrong hands, its use can be counterproductive. No matter what collar you use in training, almost all the success relies on timing. Its amazing how many people come into my class and say "my dog still forges during our walk". I take the leash, the dog is in perfect heel. Same collar, different timing.
