Hi all, Scarlet's ears had been standing good... We would have them down over nights and even up to 48 hours with them still perky, until recently... We are posting posting posting, only letting them air out now for almost 12 hours if she can make it to that. We stopped letting them down over night because they just got droopy. Last week when I took the posts off her ears flopped down right away. Am I doing something wrong? Is it common for the ears to still be a bit floppy at this age (roughly 5 months old)? I think the other O pups ears are doing good just wondering what's up with Scarlets. I have no problem to keep posting until they are up, it doesn't bother me - is that just the solution? I'm just worried I am making some type of error?

Each dog can be different how long to post. I'm sure Monica will jump in.
Usually they don't stand until they are done teething and dogs from the same litter can take different times. Zeus was posted from when he came home Jan 30th (he was born Nov 18th) right through till the 1st part of Sept. That's 7 months of posting and 9 months old with something on his ears.
From memory he was full posts till mid July, the he was taped just the tips for a short while and I finished up with about a month of breathe rite strips on the tips, the one ear was longer about a month and a half.
Zeus brother Dante ears stood way earlier than Zeus. I think from memory Dante's ears were standing like a month and maybe 2 earlier than Zeus.
See what Monica has to say but it sounds to me from what you are saying you still have more posting to do. I wouldn't let them droop. Take the posts off, clean them up, massage them and get the blood flowing, let her work them a little, and then post them back up before they droop.

Ok great thanks for the reassurance Gary!! lol I am just being super anal about her ears, I want them to stand properly.
We don't let them droop anymore it only happened twice from when we left them overnight. And it wasn't back to back, they had seemed to stand very well all day and the cartilage was very firm. We are only letting them down during the day now, massaging them, and posting back up in a few hours. They are just so weak though!
Her left ear is also a lot softer than the right. I took yours and Monica's advice with the tapings and we are still doing a cross band with cardboard, positioning them at 10 - 2.
I guess it will just take some more time, just wanted to make sure I am not doing something wrong

Reyna has a medium crop... she came home Sept 17 and her posts were off well before Christmas, so she was done by 5months ish and I likely could have stopped sooner. It's different for every dog so just keep at it!

Kerrie had a thought that it may be that Scarlett is teething? ? hmm Yeah she is. a few weeks ago she lost like 6 teeth in a week, haven't seen any come out since then though. I'm sure she is still teething... will her ears not stand until after the adult set is in now?

Most doberman's ears won't fully stand till they are done teething. Baby teeth gone and adult teeth in.

Looking at the pics in the thread with Scarlet and Diesel I can see some areas that need changing with the taping method. What I see in the photos are that your stays are set too wide and the crossband is too high. You do not have enough support at the front base and that is the crucial area of focus. The ears should stand straight and in line with the head, parallel to each-other. The only time I would splay the tips as i see in those photos is when a the ears are tipping in towards each-other, or when you need to create extra pressure at the base. Some people don`t like using a crossband, but I find its use most beneficial and recommend that the band be placed as close to the forehead as possible, as to catch some hair in the tape even. The only time I would raise the band is when the stays are fully inserted into the bottom of the bell of the ear. Now that Scarlet is older you should change the stays every 4 days, don`t go longer or you will soften the ear. Leave the stays off for as long as the ears are standing perfectly, but maybe put a band around the base of the ears when she is crated so that she doesn`t fold them during sleep. To do this you simply take about a 10 inch pc of white medical tape and wrap it around the base while holding the ear straight up. When you let go of the ear it should still be positioned correctly, straight, not in or out in any exaggerated manner. Remove the band when she isn`t crated. You can also add glucosimine as you work to correct the ear issues. Another additive that I have found beneficial is horsetail. I`m not really huge on adding calcium to the diet, you need more cartilage building supplements more so then bone building ones. I am banding Autumn`s ears at night, otherwise she sleeps on them and folds them over. Autumn was the only one in that litter that actually had rather soft cartilage and she has a long crop. Her ears stand nicely, but they fall right down when she drops a tooth, or if she sleeps on them. So I am starting to add glocosimine as I put the finishing touches to her ear development. So, back to taping basics and see if this helps. You know where to find me if you need my assistance, and if you don`t see results by changing the taping method within a couple weeks I would like to see you regardless. I`ll likely be seeing you at the next DOG walk anyhow.

Burning the midnight oil eh Monica? 2:38 AM?? Get some sleep Ha! 2:30 is an early night, and the only reason why i got to bed so early (right after i posted) is because I`m sick and Andrea helped out so that I could go to bed. We`re still watching over the pug babies during the night shift. Thank God the pups are getting big enough that they won`t need to be watched over all the time soon. Andrea takes the next shift, then my uncle takes over around 5:am or so. our sleep schedule are definitely all over the place. Thanks Monica, I would like to head up to your place next week or so when you have time to help me out. Message me to let me know if you are free on a Thursday or Saturday anytime My taping method may just need some more guidance in person. I am all for any suggestions!! Try the changes and send me photos via email. If its not right then you should come up this week-end. Next week-end I have a Dog show in Welland, sending home the Q-babies, and having our Thanksgiving dinner at some point. So it will be tough for me to see you any other day but Thursday.

Just to update, we took off Scarlet's posts last night and her ears are doing much better in just this short time of a week. They didn't flop down at all and are looking and feeling much stronger. Thanks for everyone's help! Especially Lana for posting her up this weekend!! Attachments:

You're welcome. But I didn't get the email with the pics though, can you send that.
I also want to thanks Lana for being willing to drive out to your place and lend a hand. As well to Stefan for uploading those videos of our taping session with Auguste.
