Hello all, Kaisa our P litter female loves toys that are a wee bit soft but we can't seem to find any that last more than a day. We tried another one last night called the Barnyard Pig from Tuffy toys. It was pretty firm, big and made of Kevlar. It seemed really sturdy. She had the foot torn off by this morning and the stuffing coming out. Her Kong Extreme and Nylabone interest her for only a few minutes at a time. With her teething, it seems like she needs to have something to chew with a little "give" to it, but we can't seem to find anything that lasts. We returned the Barnyard Pig today and got a frisbee type of thing made from firehose but she has already started to fray the edges. Help!! Any ideas or advice from the group? Andrea (aka Kaisa's frazzled Mommy)

My sympathies. We haven't yet found a toy that will keep Jack occupied and chewing for longer than five minutes. He instantly shreds anything with fabric on it, including Kong Wubbas, and he just isn't interested in Nylabones or deer antlers. He loves his classic Kongs, but only if we we're throwing them for him. He never was interested in chewing them, and stuffing them with treats is futile. He empties them in a minute flat.
In the summer, I give him marrow bones in the back yard, but this doesn't work at this time of year. We do have a couple of toys that can be stuffed with treats. He likes these, and they take him longer to empty than regular Kongs. One is a Kong Genius Mike, and the other is an Orbee. But he doesn't really chew these; he throws them around until the treats fall out.
A raw carrot apparently works with some dogs (not Jack). Have you tried this? I also cut up and braided an old towel, then soaked it in water and froze it before giving it to him. This required close supervision because it was fabric and when it started to thaw, he would try to shred it. There were also some puddles on the floor, but he did enjoy chewing it. And of course, it could be popped back in the freezer.

Thanks folks We have tried the Wubba Kong- three of them, and she shreds the material in two days. We do have the Kong Extreme but she gets bored with that in a few minutes. The Tuffy toys are rated for toughness, and it looks like the Barnyard Pig was 7/10, but they have a dinosaur that is rated 9/10. They are really tough toys and made with Kevlar- go figure...they can stop a bullet but not a Dobie Looks like this is a very common problem for Dobie owners. I had asked our vet about antlers, but he advised waiting on these until her teeth are firmly set in her jaw- not before 2 years of age. Will get one of the Starmark treat balls and see how that goes. Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Andrea (aka Kaisa's toy-challenged Mommy)

The best treat for my dogs raw knuckle bones with meat on it. Asha is chewing them since she was 8 weeks and her teeth look good. We had a show hanlder evaluation today... no compains about broken or displaced tooth I know Monica won't advise to give tough bones to a puppy.

Zeus it's Wubba Kongs and they usually last about the same time as a big bag of kibble and then he breaks the smaller ball and that gives him room to work on the canvas cover and eventually rip it enough to get the big soft ball out. The soft balls he likes to play catch with and they last a fair bit.
Cuz the small ones tennis ball size he loves them and they last well. he still has his 1st one from Monica as a puppy and 2 others also.
Rawhide chew sticks beef flavored bag of 5 or 6 from Pet Smart. They don't stink and are edible.
I think maybe Kaisa is just at the age when they chew to set their teeth so to speak. I think that's how Monica explained it to me after teething.
Kongs they lay around here and Zeus never cares for them. Any stuffy it's done in no time stopped them long long ago. he likes things that make noise. That's why the cuz and wubbas kongs.

Kazi is 10 1/2 months old, and she chewed deer antlers, and still does,,,..nylabones....marrow bones, and Dante chews on a chuckit ball.....a couple of bully sticks a week....just watch the chuckit ball cause as soon as they start to try and chew it take it away....the stuffy toys don't stand a chance....both our dogs are serial killers.

omg, we are soooo fortunate. Scarlet has only destroyed 2 toys. Her first tennis ball yesterday and a dollar store toy last month. We can give her squeaky balls from the dollar store and they are still in tact from when she was a pup. We stocked up on tuffie toys too, and those are wonderful for us. She also has a very large elk antler we got for her in like august? She has just gotten down to the marrow . She absolutely loves it. Here are a few suggestions for you... -bully sticks, however only last for a couple of hours for us, but with an aggressive chewer could be minutes... might be worth a try anyways. -pack a kong with some homemade stew. We do up some chicken and rice sometimes, stuff it in the kong and freeze it. You could also pack it with peanut butter and kibble, but Scarlet doesn't do good with pb so she doesn't get that anymore. -Summertime, ice cubes were really good, not sure how you would do that now though. Maybe throw a blanket down inside on a carpet area and let her have some. You could also do part chicken broth part water and freeze that into cubes. Also good for freezing in the kong . Ice feels good on their teeth when they are losing a lot of them. -Cuz toys are amazing, and I don't know how durable they are though cuz like I said Scar is a light chewer... but it really satisfies her urge to chew! Let us know how you make out!

Good Cuz has survived fights with two Dobemans in the house. That's a tough toy. I cut off Cuz legs. They are soft and dogs may swallow pieces.
Wubbas don't have long life. Kongs are boring.
Tough tugs are winners. Gino and Asha are tug games addicts.
Asha loves stuffy toys but kills them quickly. "Serial killers"... LOL Barb. That's true.

I have the cuz toy as well and had to cut the feet off of it so there was no chance for a swallowed foot and blockage... that toy is still going strong after 2 years.
Look for a JW Ball... it's a softer rubber, similar to the cuz toy but just a ball with a loud squeaker... they seem to love this, if you can stand the shrill screaming of the squeaker... I learned to tune it out. Diamond took 2 years to finally rip the squeaker out, and when she finally got it out... the rest of the ball was disintegrated. I then moved to getting her the JW Giggle ball... tougher material, and doesn't make nearly as much noise.
I've had the tuffy toys...the Gary Gator, the Shark one, etc... high rated for destruction... doesn't matter at all... the first thing Diamond will do is rip off their eyes... she hates her prey watching her disembowel them... once the eyes are gone, then the rest of it follows quickly.
Mine both have super tough Kongs and when crating I put peanut butter in them for them to try and lick it out. As soon as they see the kongs come off the counter, they bolt for their crates.
I've had the treat toys... don't last... rather than roll it to get a treat out, Diamond figured out she could just make a bigger hole, that was easier.
So the common thread here is that I keep saying Diamond... and not Magnum... Di is 2 1/2 and still very much a chewer... Magnum is a little over 5 and he will chew stuff when you give it to him, other than that he's content to watch out the window or cuddle on the couch. He has a Chuckit glow in the dark ball that he will chew on and play with when the mood strikes, and it's pretty tough... not even a sign of a toothmark in it yet.
Good luck though... these kids can, and will chew, and finding things that will stand up to them is tougher than you may think... especially if you're on the extreme end like Diamond is... EVERYTHING MUST DIE with regards to toys... and if it has any kind of squeaky thingy in it... well that MUST come out first and foremost.

Thanks so much for everyone's advice- nice to know we aren't the only ones dealing with a toy killer. I think Kaisa is on the extreme end like Diamond. She will neck-break, suffocate, rip off eyes, extremities and finally kill the toy. If there is a wee seam in the fabric, she will work away at it until she has ripped it open. The firehose toy is ripped up but still ok for now....it's only one day old! Will look into your suggestions. Any and all advice (or sympathy:-)) is really appreciated.

Oh, you MUST post that pic. I actually forgot one of Jack's favourite chew "toys": toilet paper rolls. He's 2-1/2 and we still have to keep the bathroom door closed all the time so that he can't get in and steal the toilet paper out of the basket. Just this evening, I walked into the living room to find chewed TP strewn everywhere. We're not even sure when he got into the bathroom to scoff it . . . but he's very good at sneaking behind us on tippy toes while we're brushing our teeth, then quietly disappearing to a private chewing spot. We neither see nor hear the little bum -- and it's only later that we realize what he has been up to.

It's those times when it is abnormally quiet in the house for about 3 minutes.... You then start to think... "what are they eating....why is it so quiet" Scarlet's chews of choices are paper towel rolls ripped into shreds, and FUZZY slippers (oh man) slippers are her weakness lol.
