On the weekend I read an article in the most recent Cesar's Way magazine about the benefit of shorthaired breeds using a sunblock formulated especially for animals, that does not contain zinc oxide.
After all the recent skin issues some of us with the "red" Dobes have been having and with my own Little Sunbather's practice of lounging on the grass until I force him into the shade, it sounded like something worth investigating - at least for delicate areas like nose and ears.
The product they are advertising is from a company called Epi-Pet based in Florida and was created by a veterinarian named Dr. Michael Fleck. He is also a licensed human esthetician, hence his expertise. In addition to the sunscreen, they also make a complete line of shampoo and skincare products to treat sensitivities.
I am considering ordering some for Quin so wondered if any of you use or have used a sun screen product that is safe for dogs. I mentioned this to my vet yesterday and she was interested in finding out more about the product as well.

Susan, did you find out more on his product? We have used sunscreen on the dogs noses if they're out for any long period. We have purchased it from either Global Pet or PetSmart...can't remember which as it last quite a while. But it is a good practice to get into, especially if you walk your dog when the sun is strongest, or if they're going to be playing in the yard for some time.

As well, I know Monica sent out the email regarding cooling coats for their dogs with a clients website.....these are a life saver for our pets in this extreme weather we have been experiencing lately. Personally, we have ours from "Mustluvdogs" as we didn't know about ordering them thru Monica's client. She offers a better price than the above mentioned company, and makes them herself so quality control is there. In the past, we have purchased the cooling coats from Chilly Dogs, but find they are too heavy and "wet"..... now we only use those cooling coats when the dogs come out of the lake and trek to the car. They are wet and sandy, so the coats help dry their coat while containing the sand ( somewhat )...lol

I was in PetSmart tonight, and at the cash register they were selling a product in a tube, similar to lip gloss, for the dogs nose. It was a sunscreen-type product.
