When we brought Dante home as a puppy it was winter as well. And though he wasn't impressed with being outside he and one of us had to endure the weather so he understood that he was to pee outside. When he finally did his business it was a huge celebration...clapping of our hands, praise, jumping up and down singing choirs of praise....whatever it took to make him understand that he got HUGE praise when he did his business outside. If he didn't do it the first time we went out, then he would be taken out on the 20-30 minute mark until he did. Why do this and embarrass yourself infront of the neighbours you ask? Well, to this day, we can take Kazi outside and she'll be playing -- running around and we can remind her to go pee, and she will squat and do her business. So make it a good thing, and she/he will reward you for years to come. Even now, every morning, we go out first thing ( 6am ) and she immediately does her business, and we are back inside the house within minutes.
I can remember crate training Kazi and it took her a couple of hours to settle down and realize that the crate was "ok". Her crate was beside the bed, on my side, and I just had to peek over the edge and we would look at eachother and she knew that her pack was close. The hard part though was listening to the cries from her...but she did settle in and eventually fall asleep.
I am so glad to hear that you are both ok from your vehicle accident. It could have been so much worse for both of you. A gentle reminder to everyone to use dog restraints in their vehicles. As we have experienced approx. 24" of snowfall in the last 24 hours this weekend, there have been multiple road accidents in and around the London area. Please drive carefully, and ensure your pets safety always.

Oh no I hope you and ganon are ok after the accident that's horrible. Think about getting a car harness, crate or barrier for travelling. And don't underestimate how fast a determined prey driven dobe puppy can run away hopefully you're letting him off leash In a fenced area. If not you can use a long line..., I would just be scared of him getting onto the road.. But I've heard I'm crazy about being over protective lol. Crate training is probably going to be tough but it's worth it In the end for your dog to understand they have a safe place. We slept on the floor beside Scarlet's crate for like a week and a half haha. So glad that you and Ganon are okay. What Andreina said x 1000. Even a harness is not a great answer for keeping a dog safe in a car. My sister was in a very low-speed collision while her GSD was harnessed in the back seat. The harness clips snapped on impact, and Panu ended up wedged between the gear shift and dashboard. On his way past my sister, he clipped her head and neck. She was in pain for quite a long time. This accident and the fact that dogs need to be crated at the training field (and oh yes, the fact that Puppy Jack chewed through his harness and the seat belts in my little Mazda . . . LOL) persuaded us to get an SUV big enough to carry a large crate, which is where Jack rides. As an extra precaution, the crate is strapped down and the strap is bolted to the floor. In a way, it's a good thing that Ganon got wedged under the seat and couldn't move. Imagine what might have happened if he had escaped from the vehicle and been running around on the highway. Just thinking about the possibility is soooo scary. Jack is the first dog I've crate trained, and it is sooo worth it. His sleeping crate (a huge wire one that had a partition so that we could make it smaller when he was a pup) is in the bedroom, and I think that being near us helped him settle down very quickly. He whined for five minutes the first night and was fine from then on. He's now nearly five and still sleeps in his crate, though we no longer close the door. Indeed, he's allowed to sleep on the bed (when we're not in it -- he's a bed hog) but he often chooses his crate.

I hate to be the downer on your exciting time but just enjoy your time with him and relax there are 2 different sides and opinions on dog parks, they can be good or they can totally mess your dog up. A lot of owners go there to socialize themselves and don't recognize that their dog is badly behaved. I've seen a few situations and unfortunately scarlet has been in the middle sometimes... nothing too serious but I haven't been back to a dog park since last winter. Just be careful with your pup he is going to be going through a few fear imprint stages, so just try to socialize him with dogs you know in a controlled environment. He won't be use to the leash at first, long or short... to him even you are still new lol! I didn't worry about walking or really training until scar was home for a couple weeks and knew that we were her new "people". Let him wear the leash inside the house and run around with it on so he understands it... Enjoy him being this small and cute for now cuz it changes real fast!!! Lol Andreina, thank you so much for your advice. To be honest I think I really needed someone to say it. I feel like I've been trying to "mold" my boy into the perfect dog way too quickly that I am not giving him time to just be a puppy (which is what Monica advised initially, as well). It's been so long since I've owned a dog... I'll definitely slow things down. Attachments:

I was playing risky games driving my dogs without any gates. It cost me $450 (crazy price for Subaru dog guard!) but it worth every penny! Dog gates or a wire crate are the best choice to drive your dog safe.

He's soooooo cute!! ;D Can't wait to meet you guys! Same! I met Stephanie on pick up day. Definitely want to schedule a meet with you guys and whomever else. Anyways, I ended up getting really paranoid about letting Ganon off leash. I definitely don't want him chasing squirrels and/or anything else. I really appreciate all your advice and comments

Hey Everyone, I just want to start off by saying I'm so glad you and Ganon are okay! That could have ended so much worse. I think I may look into a harness or restraint of some kind. So we picked Bosco up yesterday and he is a DREAM. He slept the whole 7 hour drive home with a few pee stops. He is settling in nicely. He and our 6 year old female samoyed already love each other, my kids are thrilled and the cat is pissed, lol. Last night was a dream. I got him used to the crate while the kids were getting ready for bed (it's upstairs) and he laid quietly in there for 15 minutes, then fell asleep. Later I brought him downstairs and put his bed beside mine on the floor and blocked him in. He slept until I woke up at 4 and noticed he was awake but still laying down, so I took him out for a quick pee and he went right back to sleep until 7:30. I feel spoiled but I'm certain it may change. lol. He has ate a little but has not drank hardly anything yet, a few laps of water yesterday afternoon and that's it. Hopefully he will settle soon. I will get some good pics of him whenever I can get him to stop bouncing for a second, lol.

Thank you all for your help and ideas with Monroe. Here's an update: Monroe is slowly starting to like the outdoors and doing his business more and more where they should be done. If he's indoors he's officially trying very hard to pee on the peepee pad. For the poo, it's still a little bit everywhere but he responds well to discipline (thank god). Jordan, you truly saved my life. I took your advice about the cage and he slept in it last night and simply started barking at 5:30 in the morning. I let him out and he urinated on his peepee pad. He then grabbed a toy and went to his crate. I went to bed until he started crying again (around 6) and then I picked him up and sat on the couch with him until we both fell asleep lol. As for the food, I'M SO GRATEFUL for auntie Monica's handbook. I sliced up an apple and mixed it with his food and he ate everything so quickly All is going well here, any updates on any of Monroe's brothers and sisters??

Wow Jordan. Glad to hear that you and your family are ok. That sounds incredibly scary.
As to everyone and your pups. I swear as soon as we got our pups it got cold. Mira isn't liking the temperature so house breaking is going slowly. How is everyone else doing?

Mira isn't liking the temperature so house breaking is going slowly. How is everyone else doing? Thanks everyone. Ganon seems to be doing okay. House breaking is fine, with an accident here and there (probably our fault). He's getting used to he cold and will walk with me a few blocks with a few tugs on the leash for encouragement. One thing I'm worried about is his dominance level with the Pomeranian. The Pom will not bark, jump on, or tease Ganon... Instead, Ganon constantly tries to "pounce" on him like he's one of his squeaky toys. He sometimes will take toys and food from its mouth. Then, he'll chew away at the Pomeranians fur. Nugget (the Pom) will usually just sit there and take it or run away, but yesterday Ganon learned that he was able to clamp down on the fur to prevent it. What should i do?! I've been "Caesar Millan-ing" him. Lol, but Ganon is a tough one. Very persistent in trying to get Nugget. I really need this to calm down, so if anyone has advice, I would really appreciate it. I will probably email Monica about this too, as she has Pugs at home. Attachments:

Mira isn't liking the temperature so house breaking is going slowly. How is everyone else doing? Monroe is not liking the cold at all either. He is starting to do his peepee outside, still does some of it indoors (but on his peepee pad mostly). As for his poo, does it outside really rarely, he prefers to do it on our floor lol. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and today Monroe went up and down the stairs all by himself instead of being picked up I was so proud!! Besides that, I left him home alone today in his crate for 2 hours while I went to run errands, when I got home he was patiently waiting and started crying for me to let him out. Tomorrow will be his first day home alone while both of us work and I'm so worried/sad For those that got their pup's ears cropped...how is the healing going for you guys? Monroe is almost fully healed and ready to be taped. When I go to clean his ears he falls asleep lol. Hope everyone else is doing well...I would love to hear about some progression on Monroe's brothers and sisters.

Mira's ears are still healing, her right one had a larger gash (a stitch came out prematurely) so I can't tape right now, my guess is another 3-4 days. They do love having their ears rubbed though considering the amount of attention they need for the next few months that's a good thing .
