I was up early on Friday morning and let Jack out to potty. You may recall that here in TO, it rained overnight, so when he came in, I wiped his feet with a towel. And discovered edema on the front and sides of his right hock. But it clearly wasn't painful. No limp, no licking, no nothing. Jack didn't appear to even notice it. Still, it was strange, so I prepared to schlep him off to the vet.
When Bill got up an hour later, I showed him Jack's leg -- and the puffiness had gone down quite a bit. It was definitely still there, but it had receded enough that we called off the vet run and decided to wait and see.
That afternoon, Jack had his usual long nap, then got up for his late afternoon hike. Suddenly, the edema was back. Not as pronounced as first thing in the morning, but his leg was puffed up again, nonetheless.
So his hike was on-lead only. No stopping to play or do any training. By the time we got home, the puffiness had gone down considerably. And by Saturday morning, it was pretty much gone. Today, his leg is completely back to normal.
My first guess was spider bite or an insect sting or bite, but when this kind of thing has happened in the past, the swelling has been tight and painful. And it hasn't gone up and down and up and down again. Jack's edema felt more like a partially deflated balloon. And it definitely wasn't a hygroma. It was not a fluid-filled sac (and besides, I don't think hygromas disappear that quickly). The puffiness stretched down his leg on three sides nearly all the way to his ankle.
Of course, I Googled. And scared myself s***less with possibilities. So I stopped that immediately.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any suggestions? We'll obviously be keeping an eye on his leg to see whether there's a recurrence.
