Interesting question Lana, I have never personally owned a male so my response is limited to females, and mostly spayed females to boot. Bladder infections and the like can cause the best of us to have to "go" in the "wee" hours...sorry couldn't help it. ;D Diesel could have bladder or urethra issues if it is a persistant problem and not the norm for him. Kitana, my shepard huskie cross, began having pee issues at age 8, it turned out to be cancer on her urethra and bladder. Age could also play a part, Sophie is now down to 6 hours max before needing outside. (she's 14) That being said I know from experience that females, spayed females, can develop "leakage issues". They don't necessarily pee, but the muscles are not strong enough due to the surgery and they "leak", sometimes a lot, sometimes only a little and you only notice the smell over time. There is a medication that helps control that, however, the name is escaping me right now. Isi had little leaks over time and it (medication) prevented it in the night when the muscles are natually more relaxed. Juno, Isi, Kitana and Sophie (up until a few years ago) all could hold their bladders for 8+ hours. We once had our dogs, including our only male Bailey, hold their pee for almost 16 hours while we were at the hospital waiting to be seen. I couldn't believe we didn't have a mess...you could see the relief on their faces when they got to go outside. I've never been a fan of pee pads especially in the house, although there are times when they are needed, sickness, age, after birthing..etc. I wouldn't use them inside, I have seen them used to train dogs to pee in specific spots in the yard to prevent those unsightly burn spots from being everywhere. Update on Porschas peeing troubles - so weekends she sleeps in the bedroom on her fancy bed with us - no peeing, no issues. With the crate, I left a blanket in there, free reign of water, but the door open for her to come and go as she pleases. I know she ends up sleeping on the couch thats there with Zeus because the whole couch is warm. But guess what I found in her crate again....a wet blanket! She went in there to pee!! I cant figure out what that means. Im so confused. Maybe I should just make my life easier and let her sleep on her bed next to us every day but then what to do when we are at work? I guess next step is to remove the blankets altogether then see what happens as I havent tried that yet.

Its habitual. She knows that she can pee and hide it in the blanket, she's been doing it since day one. So yes, if she is safe loose as you left her, leave the crate open and no blanket. I would put the coffee table on your sofa if you don't them on it when you're not home. Another trick is tinfoil, they don't like laying on that. How old is your female now?

Just to add .... we use baby gates to block off areas we don't want Dante or Kazi to go...and we have put a baby gate on the couch, or the bed to restrict them from jumping on those. It's amazing how they respect them. It's helpful when you can't always be watching them and their movements.

My female is a yr old now. Still a pup in the brain lol....ill keep trying this for a while. Dont like leaving them loose for too long periods of time. The room they have has an old couch it it so i dont care if they sleep on that but the good ones they stay off of unless we invite them up. Im sure they will go on if we arent home as zeus does when he roams the whole house but i dont feel porscha is ready yet to be free. Next step is no blanket hopefully i wont find puddles lol the baby gate is a great idea too. I may try that once i trust she wont pee on my hardwood if i left her alone

She could just have a weak bladder .... Have you tried it consistently in the crate though? It could e behavioral as well... So maybe try it a few nights in a row Does not a weak bladder cause incontinence? Asha doesn't leak. She can hold for 8+ hours after the heat for approx. 2 months. Then she gets occasional accidents at night... it's getting more frequent before the heat. Now she is peeing every night before her heat in February. I assume it may be hormonal. If she had a small or weak bladder her peeing issues would be consistent. Does it make sense? Monica what do you think about cornsilk? Maybe you know other herbs to use? I was giving Asha cornsilk (1 caps a day) and didn't notice any changes. I thought primerose oil helped but.... it did not stop her from peeing. I will talk to my vet again on our next visit. UTI was ruled out. So did incontinence. Barb, that's not an option for me to get up in the middle of night. I will start using X-pen as a temporary solution. If their mom Juno doesn't have problems to hold for 8 hours our girls peeing schedule should change to better in the future.

My husband came with a great idea to join two crates: her crate with a dog bed for sleeping and Gino's crate with a plastic pad for peeing. My poor boy lost his crate and now he is sleeping on the sofa. No complains so far When I came to unlock Asha in the morning I could not believe SHE DID NOT PEE....and she was locked for 7 1/2 hours! How much I understand my girl then? Most likely her peeing is a behaviour problem....hmmmmm.... I hope we are making a progress.

I know this sounds silly, buy when Kazi pees outside I still give her LOTS of praise.....I try to raise my voice so she recognizes a different tone, and a tone she associates with something positive. I remember Monica saying when Dante was a puppy to praise them when they peed outside.....we still do it to this day, although we have stopped jumping up and down, and clapping our hands...LOL

She did not pee last night either!!! She might be shocked with new settings but she didn't whine. I must admit Monica does a great crate training. Asha behaves perfect in her crate. So far so good... keep my fingers crossed! Yes we all (dog walker, my hubby and me) praise her for each pee outside. Gino is confused why he pee is not being recognized LOL

Asha did not pee in the crates since i set it up. I let her run free on the weekend and she peed on the kitchen floor. Then she was back in the crates and no pee. Go figure... likely a lack of proper training.

UPDATES: Asha DID NOT PEE on the weekend. She slept 8 hours!!!
I guess she feels more comfortable being locked in the crates..or maybe she is calmer because Gino is not accessible and she doesn't need to watch him non-stop LOL
